Classifying plastics
Okay so you have
grubs- long curl tail paddletails- the t looking tail of sliders etc but what do you guys classify as creaturebaits, stickbaits, jerkbaits etc for example i have yamamoto tiny ikas which i think should be jerkbaits as they are really only good when you do that and jerk them around. Then bass minnows to me could be stick baits as they are a one piece with little tail structure but then could be creaturebaits as they look like a fish. The shrimp patterns, are they creaturebaits too? Then there is eyeball tails, creature, jerk or stick baits. I know im confused so what placcy goes in what category? |

So i know everyone keeps theirs in bags and use certain ones but i still dont know which ones are what....
The main reson im asking is that in WAFM it states something about creaturebaits taking Dror to the win in Albany. I thought eyeballs were jerkbaits. Dan, obviously its something that could use clarification but if no one is interested i wont bother pushing it. Cheers for the helpful advice. |

I think creature baits involve things with legs. ie. tanks, hawgs, nymphs and the like. It's not so much a description of whether or not a plastic looks like a creature as most do. Of course there's the worms too, but I think they're in a class of their own. Eyeball tails sound like jerkbaits to me, long, cylindrical and with no notable appendages. Their entire action is dictated by the angler's working of the lure...well, for the most part anyway...

Hey Brad, don't worry, you posted on a weekend, the Pro's only log on on weekday (most anyway), the rest log on all week
And Piscineidiot may be right about the definition of creature baits which may include Bug Ants, Guanna Lizards, etc?

Cheers Owen, thats what i would have thought too. Then again they look like worms so could be creatures...

Thanks Big Pete,
Brad, the more I think about it, the more I believe that worm lures are in their own category...Just as tube lures such as the pad-tue imitate a shrimp, but aren't creature lures. Breamdreamer's got the idea, bugants etc. are solid plastics with little legs off 'em, hence, creature lures. Or at least that's what I think...

This is a good thread to start Brad, because there is confusion associated with the 100's of plastics out there. I think most of the definitions have been explained so far. As said I think jerkbaits and stickbaits generally require the angler to work them rather than relying on the natural action of the lure eg like grubs. Eyeballs seem to cross several boundaries I reckon. The construction ie soft and flexible means that the lure will move with the current if left sitting on the bottom but can be worked like a jerkbait on the retrieve, drop etc. Creature baits are more crustacean/insect type plastics as Piscineidiot has mentioned. Yep definitately a "worm class" has immerged.

I would classify
Stickbaits- Bass Minnows, Senko's etc. Little or no action to them Jerkbaits- Tiny Ikas, Snapbacks, Ecogear Minnow S. All have some decent type of action on the drop or when moving them. Creaturebaits- Imitation shrimp and squid. Have action that mimics its pattern "Wormbaits"- eyeballs Spose when you think about it worms are creatures so creaturebaits was probly applicable for WAFM. |

Brad when i look at how a bass minow works with a small jerking action it reminds me so much of a shrimp or prawn, i know it has the body of a fish but shrimp is what im seeing.

For starters when I read Brads question I thought he was asking how to classify sp's when storing them in plano boxes.
But for me I call eyeball tails, bass minnows and flick baits stick baits. The only one that may be difficult to categorise is the new slider variant that is an eyeball look alike with the paddle tail. Anything else, yabbie, power hawg etc is a creature. Just my 2 cents Nathaniel
