Why Luvias, why not SUSTAIN???
Hi all
I have read through the threads and it appears the Luvias and Capricorns are the peferred reels over the Shimano sustain. The Luvias seems to be highly regarded by many as the ultimate bream reel. I was always under the impression that the Sustains were the ultimate bream reel.... I know this has been touched on before but I was interested to hear from anyone who has a Sustain 1000FD especially those who have had trouble with the little reel. There's talk about the spool being too small and what I have noticed with my limited experience with one of these reels is that there seems to be a tiny bit of play in the handle? Has anyone else had this problem - for a $400+ reel, everything about the reel should be as smooth as!!! That's where I think the Luvias comes into its own... Anyway interested to hear any feedback about the Sustain 1000FD - good and bad.... |

Get the shimano catalog and the daiwa one from japan and see how much daiwa has over shimano, shimano is just marketing apart from a few reels, which are good imo

Shimano just don't seem to bring out anything new, just upgrade existing reels. The Sustain seems ancient to me nowdays.
Daiwa have the Luvias and Certate and heaps of new baitcasters as well. And I agree on the 1000 spool size (although mines a stradic) you just can't get as much distance as with a 2500 even with lighter line on the smaller reel. So I was always a big Shimano fan but Daiwa have overtaken them now. |

Hi Last cast,
Steersy has one (try contatcing him through my site). He had issues with the line lying at first due to too many/not enough washers. Although i haven't had any of the reels mentioned i have been told Daiwa's are heaps stronger overall. May not be as flashy but will take a fair beating. eddy p.s many people have capricorns probably as they don't cost HEAPS. They are a top little reel. |

mate one of the thing that annoys me about shimano finesse is that the 1000 thousand is a bit small, ie not enough line retrieved, and the 2500 is just a bit big

Thanks for the advice guys - I'm still a little unsure whether I should go down the Shimano path or venture into new territory and grab a Daiwa...I agree that marketing of the Sustains by the likes of Starling and Bushy has helped keep the shimano name out there but even so they appear to be nice reel for the money. Having said this I will definitely be checking out one of the Luvias - maybe that can be for next Xmas....

Well Im a shimano user, never had a problem with the reels I use, did have to adjust the way the line layed on my sustain but as you said was just a washer..... I make the most of my choices on the weight of the reel, which to me rules out the Capricorns, and the fact I saw to many faulty bail arms on them, I havnt picked up the rest so cant comment....... I do like the look of the Certate and newest Shimano Stella though, but for that I just gotta arrange or plan a divorce and I`ll be going shopping......
The Certate drag setting look awesome...... As the guys said pick a few up and see how it feels on your rod, Id even take it into the shop your buying from. cheers

You get what you pay for
I am with you Richo,
I have a Stella FA 2500, Stella AR 2000, Twinpower 2500, Daiwa Certate 3000, Daiwa 2500 Capricorn, Team Daiwa X 2000.. I don't beleive Shimano have just got a bigger marketing budget the truth is they have a brilliant product as do Daiwa. People on this site hold the Luvias in such High regard due to the price they have paid bringing them in from overseas for which they are extremely good value for money! The luvias has only just been made available in selected tackle outlets in Australia and retails for $500-$600 and personally I would go for a certate over the Luvias or the Sustain. If you walk into a shop and just spin the handle on any reel at the top end it is hard to justify the extra spend. If you know someone that owns a Stella or Certate, ask them what they are like to fight a fish on and how superior these drag systems are .( If you know them well get them to let you catch a fish on one ) The Sustain Retails in Australia for $380 which is cheaper than the Luvias that it is being compared to anyway. I would reccomend buying what you can afford and justify, if budget is not an issue then for me it would be a Stella every time. If we look at it Logically Stella RRP $759 Certate RRP $695 Luvias RRP $490 Sustain RRP $380 Capricorn RRP $225 Stradic RRP $219 Surprise ,surprise this is about the orrder I would rate these reels. The fact is you get what you pay for and all these reels listed are great reels and it comes down to your use and budget . Only my opinion but I beleive it's logical. Support your local tackle shop where you can as after all it's the stock that he has on the shelf that allows us to look and feel and have an opinion.. Thanks Woody for the info. - you are right - at the Sustain/Stella and Luvias end of the market the reels are all great reels and it comes dwon to more or less, what you can afford. I think what ever reel I get from this end of the market will provide me with a top notch reel that will serve me well for many years...

Hi ben,
I believe the washers are below the spool. T hey make the reel throw loops and lay line off the spool if there are too many not enough. eddy |
