Penn Affinity sounds to good to be true

Has anyone used or seen the new Penn Affinity reels, had a look at one the other day they dont seem to bad for $149.

I thought it was a bit heavy 280 grams (1000) and the line roller was a bit bulky but it had an awsome drag. I am petty sure the reel is a renamed Ryobi.

Specs- 3 sizes 1000- 4000
- 8 ball bearings
- air bail
- waterproof drag
- slow oscilation worm drive
- full metal body
- super micro pitch drag
- V shaped rotor & spool

There is a cheaper version called the Applause less bearings and dose not have the worm drive oscilation. Both reels have air bail and are braid friendly.

Any feedback welcome

Chris

I 've seen them in a catalouge ,recomended retail for the affinity was ~$175 for the 1000. So $149 is a good price. Can I ask where you saw it?
They certainly look the goods and at the price they would be pretty hard to beat, assuming they live up to the hype. Its got everything you need, worm drive oscilation, metal body, tubular SS bail arm (as per Daiw capricorns and up), shallow braid friendly spool with Ti lip and classy looks.
If you awere just setting up they would be an excellent option. In fact I wouldn't mind checking one out in the 4000 size for other fishing.

I got hold of a 4000 about a month ago from a local SA tackle store for $149. This reel is a little large for bream on soft plastics but would be excellent for flathead or jew. I have been using it for light surf fishing throwing 15 gram lures at Australian Salmon on the new XDS Fireline, 7 kg breaking strain. The reel is exceptional for the money and every bit as good as the Capricorn 1500 I have for bream. The drag is excellent and it has a smooth powerful feel to it. No problems at all with Salmon up to about 1.5 kilos so far. The new XDS is perfect for spinning as it lays very well on the spool and casts smoothy. I have not seen any of the smaller sizes that would be suitable for bream. Certainly a good buy for the money.
