Leader for Kayak Trolling

Hello,
This is my first post here. I was trolling in my Kayak yesterday through Noosa Sound and the Woods Bay. I got snapped off three times - by what I have no idea. I was trolling using a combination of either a 3" Bass Minnow or a Bloodworm Squidgy.

Can anyone suggest what may have been hitting the line and secondly what type of leader should I use?

Thanks
Nic

Hi nik,

Bass minnow have VERY little movement using a straight troll/retrieve!!!

Were you jigging them??

You got busted off??? or bitten off???

Hi Nic,

What line and leader are you using at the moment? What kid of knots? How tight do you have your drag set? Where in the line was it breaking?

I think the first time was a straight bite off, but not sure on the others. They did run hard for a few seconds - I didn't even get a chance to take the rod out of the holder, so I think they were bite off's as well.

I must admit I wasn't using a leader - clearly I have now learned my lesson!

I've been using mono, but have now bought some 6lb fireline. I'm just not too sure if my knots will hold with the fireline, so need to practice some.

I'm thinking the 6lb fireline with a 15lb - 20lb leader should do it? Any suggestions?

eddy, yes I understand that, but I am just going through a very experimental stage. The kayak gives a nice side-to-side action which I was hoping might flow through to the minnow. It was a bright sunny day and there was some surface activity so I just tried it out for something different.

Just ran up to the Barra Jack's and the guy was pretty sure it would've been Chopper Tailor. I've loaded up on some haevy mono for a leader and I'll give it another bash next weekend.

Thanks everyone.

did you check the leader after it was bitten off? tailor shouldnt usually bite right over a bass minnow unless there pretty big.
