That seems extraordinary doesn't it!
I can imagine them trying a red/brown plastic or maybe a shrimpy looking plastic as we used to get them on sandworm often enough in East Gippsland while bream fishing, but on a minnow type lure must really be a freaky thing. So much for their vegetarian status. Maybe yours was an evil mutant from thr Sydney Harbour murks and it migrated ;-)

I was sitting on my wharf with my wife and son and he won a fishing contest on the weekend and won some hard bodied lures.
I just showed him how to cast (he had to be careful as our cat had followed us out) and first go a Blackfish! I fish for Blackfish a lot with weed and catch plenty but it was a real thrill to get one on the back trebles of a Sneaky Scorpion. There a great fighting fish, I wish it was a common occurence

Hi Jim,
Congratulations to your son (sorry forgot his name already) for the comp and catching the Blackfish , I meant to come over after the presentation but got sidetracked. I never got a Blackfish on a hardbody but have got one on a pumkinseed Slider in the Georges River. I think that some fish will attack a lure as a predatory instinct more than a feed sometimes .

Good to hear your son did well Jim - another addict in the making??
I think Blackfish hit lures more out of aggression than feeding, I've only ever caught 4 and 2 of them were hooked in the side of the head... gotta be a 'get the hell out of here' swipe.

I agree Dave, I reckon its territorial as well, though the bugger was hooked good and proper in the mouth!
Kingpin, I had to post you a picture looking out my front door, sorry mate

ive seen articles with blackfish with attacks, and scorpions hanging out of their mouth i suppose that it can be done occassionaly but i wouldn't bother targeting them with lures
i had a suprise when i caught a blackfish on a live mullet no joke.about 35cms it wasnt a perfect hook up though,as mentioned before it could have been territorial ,i didnt think they ate mullet at all but if they eat mullet every now and again i suppose they would eat the odd lure as well
