I've never had faith with loop knots in light leaders mainly because I can't seem to find one that doesn't weaken the line considerably.

A couple of weeks back I was watching some fishing show and saw Carl Jocumsen tie one that was a little different.
He started out the usual way with a granny, then the tag through the tow point. Then instead of going up through the granny he took the tag above it before twisting the line 3 times, blood knot style then going back through the granny.
Hope that makes sense.

After giving it a go with some 4lb FC, its the strongest loop I've been able to tie yet. I haven't tried it on the water yet but its inspired me to give it a go.

I used to use this one pictured below

I wondered about their strength but never found a fish that could break it

I prefer to use snaps and a uni knot these days. I've always hated tying loop knots - Getting the loop the exact right shape without twists was always a hassle for me.

But I also think it might be psychological with me. They remind me of a very dark period in my fishing career when I used to get my arse kicked every weekend when we used to use Baby Vibe 35mm.

I also use the one in the picture. Never had it break when on a fish....only on a snag.

Actually - Now that I think about - I used to use it with 6lb leaders and about 500grms of drag (quite light) and couldnt get a fish to snap it.

When it came to snags - My leader knot would often break before the loop knot.

But I was using 5 turn surgeon loops as a leader knot at the time. If I was using FG's it would have been a different story.

So while I wondered about how strong they were - I kept tying them - so they cant have been that bad

Lefty

BFL's drawings are very similar to Lefty Kreh's loop, its only where the tag finishes that it differs.

Pretty sure there have been numerous tests and the old Rapala loop knot is slightly stronger than the Lefty, but a little more complex to tie.

Lefty loop is it yellow door ?? It's the first loop knot I learnt but I was never overly confident in it every time I would cinch them down they would turn out different .

Sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I personally do not use them as I use clips on HBs and a Fish-N-Fool on jigheads.

Cheers

Sorry - I never learnt the name of it - I just used top call it a loop knot. I got better at tying them over time but I did come out with some varied results while learning. Long loops and loops with a twist, were my specialty

Alot of these knots look very similar - just depends on where the tag slips through at the end of the knot

I use clips instead of loops knots now - these 3 sizes cover everything I do.

They've havent let me down yet - but I dont use more than 3kg of drag for anything,

The little ones are rated to 11lbs
The mediums are 20lb
And the big fellas are 39lbs

p.s - I just tested the 11lb and it let go at 30lb -------I also tested the 20lb version and the scales got to 44lb before I got scared and stopped pulling------- I'm not even going to try to max out the 39lbers.

I do it the same. Either way works whether you go back through the knot then do the wraps or the way its done in the video.

A mate of mine showed me a different loop knot. He suggested that this knot mainly used when using heavy line.

Create a double overhand knot. Thread the tag end through your hook. With the tag end thread it through the space created by the double overhand twice and lubricate and tighten. It appears to work but I haven't caught a big fish to test it.
