Fireline colours

Here's a question from an absolute newbie. I just got 2 sets of line to spool on my two rods, both of which were given to me. I'm a total beginner (EXCEPT i've been fishing twice-first time with my friend doing everything for me and I ended up catching a 43cm big fat bream with fat blue lips!, and second time by myself and draggin my gf and she caught a big fat 40cm bream...not bad for 2 trips but THATS it , now I'm hooked)

SO I bought Fireline in BLACK, 4lb for my littly rod and 6lb for my slightly bigger rod. Then I use a no name uber cheap "mono" 6lb "leader". I'm gonna get some Vanish for this soon but for the main line, is BLACK a bad colour for fishing in either the day OR night? I didnt even know Fireline came in other/fluoro colors until I read that someone on this board use them.

I'm prob gonna post a gazillion q's on this board cos I wanna be able to consistently catch fish so PLEEEEASE help!

yo matrix welcome to the board. don't hestitate to ask anything here, the guys will help u for sure.
for fireline, i dun even know there's a black coloured one! and i guess it's pretty bad for fishing also cos u can't see it on the water! fluoro pink or green is best as it's most visible when bream fishing cos visual is very important

Matrix was probably refering to the grey coloured fireline. It's not really black and it will lighten up in colour with use(like all fireline. ).
I have a 6lb spool on my hardbody reel and I think they are alright and not too hard to see in the day.
Cheers!

Thanks for the welcome!

Actually yeah the color of the 4 and 6 lb Firelines are grey. BUT I actually bought 20lb Fireline b4 being told its prob too much and THATS pretty black.

I know abt the fluoro (at least the non blacks/grey) are easier to see but I wonder if it (black/grey)affect the fish in regard to catching them. The bait shop guy said no, besides, I will be using Vanish for trace. So much to learn.......

Another q....the 4 and 6 lb lines are so fine that my spool looks empty so if I ad more line by joining with a uni to uni knot (yup yup I know abt using mono or whatever in the base), will I end up getting kinks one day when I get to the knot as I lose line to snags etc etc?

You'd be replacing your line when it gets down that far, but even fishing a lot it takes a while to get down that far. You only lose a foot or two everytime you replace your leader and it would be fairly uncommen to cut your line off further up the line (you tend to break/cut off closer to the fish). the only time you really loose fair amounts of line is when you get unmanagable knots, just remember to take it easy undoing tangles and that shouldn't happen top often.

And do fill your spool with mono before putting your Fire line on, even if its only a few wraps on really small spools. I know you said you know, but it is more imortant than you might think to have the spool at full capacity.

Actually I was thinking over the weekend...I've decided to just use some mono to fill up the reel, it seems a waste to ad so much fireline when its only gonna act as filler.

I went fishing over the weekend and i only line i lost was the leader, which was mono.

Thanks for advice every1, except no one has told me if the the knot where I join lines will eventually cause kinks....or snags on the rod or reel

yeh you have to fill your spool up with mono underneath the fireline. try to make it about nine pound because having four pound mono underneath fireline is to practical because the mono will snap before the fireline in most instances.

Not too bad

Matrix,

I use 4lb smoke coloured fireline too. no worries with it mate it works well. My backing doesn't come off because I've got a full 300yd spool on the reel and as this gets down I just take it off, add more backing and respool it.

My leader knot is a 20 turn albright from 4lb fireline to 13lb flurocarbon leader and this works well. it can catch on the guides although this is normally only a problem if the tag ends are slightly too long. Trim the tags right down and you should be fine.

Cheers,
Brad Heath

Thanks Sarge haha, when u mentioned the "20 turn albright" just imagine me with 20 ???????s above my head. I'm only just getting the hang of tying knots, and I esp hate tying onto hooks cos I keep pricking myself.Doh! Abt trimming the tag ends, u mean the leftover bit right? I find if i trim too close with the knot I use, it comes off so I leave a teeny bit for a bit of insurance.

Anyway I bought some el cheapo mono 12lb (they didnt have any 9lb)as filler, and some VANISH to use as leader.

Going fishing tonight, hopefully lotsa bream around, cos the barometric pressure is way high today 1025.6 as of 5pm! No idea if its good for land based fishing though! my other big rod will have a bit of squid on the hook tho...maybe get lucky with a small mulloway

No worries

Matrix,

Tag end......yep it is the leftover bit.

You'd do well to invest in geoff wilsons fishing knots and rigs book. Fantastic book with heaps of info. Then all you need to do is practice.

Good luck with the fishing.

Thanks Sarge. I've finally respooled my reel, man was it a pain in the ass!

Abt the book, yeah I'll prob get that one day but right now I'm making do with all the knots/rigs I've downloaded from the net...freebies are always better for peasant students
