Daiwa 233 fly reel

Hi guys

My little brother picked up one of these for $5 or $10 at a garage sale. I've done a google and can't find out much else other than it's suited for 7wt line. Was wondering if any fly gurus can help me out with some more info - quality etc? Saltwater suitability?

Maybe Bear or someone else should know.

Cheers!

It's a very vintage reel that when buffed up is a beautiful piece of history. I believe it is ball bearing and aluminium spool with adjustable drag and pawl; and can be left or right handed wind. It is a freshwater reel.

Needs a bit of a tidying up, this is the reel. It has what looks like mono on it from the previous owner...

Given the mono, I would almost guarantee its use as a Black Fish reel. Looks like it would do that nicely, if fly is not your thing.

I would suggest this is quite an old reel, made long before aircraft grade aluminium became the go-to metal for fly reels.
I'd keep this reel well away from salt water.
It probably belongs in a collection......Scotty.

Thanks for the replies guys. Might keep it on the shelf then. I wonder if it would actually clean up - the aluminium I mean?

Cheers again
