Suggest me a combo

Although it will be used for Pikey Bream up in FNQ, the majority of it will be spinning for Jungle Perch, Khaki/Sooty Grunters, Tarpon and rat Barramundi - so fresh and salt and often getting dunked. I currently have a Stradic FJ 2500 on a Daiwa Generation Black Pinster II which lacks the casting distance and is a little too heavy. I want an ultralight combo and am willing to spend $600 for the right outfit.

I'm after a low-geared, lightweight and overall reliable fishing reel. Ideally I would like to be running 4 - 6lbs braid on this set-up and whilst line capacity and drag isn't imperative, the line needs to be somewhat abrasive (which I've found currently my 4lbs Fins does actually achieve).

From what I'm seeing, a JDM Daiwa Luvias 2004 would be most appropriate but with their lack of availability, a 1003 seems most likely. I worry about how little of abrasive-resistant PE0.4-0.6 I would fit on a 1003 and I do acknowledge the limitation of such a small reel but really want to limit how many 20-year old Jungle Perch are swimming around with jewelry. Sorry this post is so long, just trying to give you the scenario so you can best help me.

Phenix m1 6'9" 4-10lb and 2004 luvias. Sub $600 and weighs under 300grams.
I have the exact combo and I use it for everything.

Aegis Crucis rod and Pfleuger Supreme XT reel. $200 if you buy the reel at Anna's when on special. Add some SAS braid and you've spent $240. That's a shat load of money left for lures! OK, if you want, look at a Daiwa Gen Black rod. You've still got heaps left for lures and leaders. Fins, no! Sub $300 and still weighs under 300g.

Get a certate 2004 jdm a little solid beast as it looks like you'll need a bit more power than a luvias 1003.
Then put it on a black label v2 spin or a commander at a stretch of your budget,
Cheers Matt

And with regards to the Phenix M1, is it a two piece? Was hoping to keep it in around the 6'6 to 7ft as well, for the record.

I've considered a 2004 Certate as well. Am I missing anything of similar price/quality from say Shimano, Quantum etc.? Daiwa look to have greater saturation for the higher quality gear..

If you're going JDM have a look at a Shimano Twinpower 2500. A Certate or Luvias would go just as well. With regards to the rod, Phenix are pretty good rods. I have a Baitcaster rod from them which I love!
Daiwa black label 701 LXS would be a good rod and look great with a Certate or Luvias.

In terms of abrasion resistance, have you considered using Flurocarbon line? I use it in amongst mangroves and it is great.

Definitely require a 2-piece for the tight jungle fishing I can do. So the m1 is off the cards.

I feel like in terms of bang for buck, I won't get as much by running a Stradic Ci4/+ or Rarenium - having said that I do like the Stradic FJ range for that bang for buck, no nonsense reel.

In terms of line, the way to successfully target Jungle Perch are to get casts into areas where the fish can't see you, usually a pool above where I stand. Often times I'll need casts to exceed 20 to 30m and think I may struggle running fluorocarbon in these systems with a limited casting range. Having said that I've never fished with a straight through FC set-up. Happy to try otherwise.

Straight through fc still casts really well. I guess it depends on cast weight. If you want bang for your buck, then yes a Stradic kills it. The you can spend more on a really cool rod, you get one custom made for the money you are talking. Ten 20 custom rods are very cool as are the Phenix ones made by Weapons Custom and Skunkworks. Look up Martin Lo as a member on here as he uses Phenix up north for exactly what you are targeting

If cast distance is an issue keep to the 2000 series reels.

Most of my fishing will involved plastics, spinners and surface. I've realised I really would like a Luvias 2004 and a close friend of mine suggested the 2004H model will still be fine for my style of fishing and it is still available. I'm very tempted to bite the bullet and do it.
