Tax on importing gear

I want to order 2 rods from Kazu at JA but was wondering if there is a limit to the invoice amount before tax sets in. From memory it was $1000 but cant remember clearly.

Wanted to order 2 rods and a reel which will definitely put me over the threshold, but they don't pack rods with anything else so just the 2 rods will bring me just over the limit i think.

Any pointers to get around this while still combining postage costs? Is the calculation made on the Japanese Yen or the AU dollar?

Yeah get the rods sent individually, may cost more on the postage but less on the Tax side.

Just request the person that sends them make up a bodgy invoice that does not go over $1000 with postage if you can.

Customs treat that as a single consignment:

"If you are receiving multiple packages from the same supplier within a few days of each other and the total value exceeds AU$1000 you will be required to submit an import declaration for the entire consignment."

It should be $1000 excluding postage.
The value of goods only in regards to importing.
10% GST and 5% duties applies.
You'd be unlucky to get pulled up on the multiple parcels clause.

Besides all that I thought we had a FTA with Japan???
If so than the invoice needs to state Made In Japan then no extra fees apply - provided the rods ARE made in Japan.

The FTA is in place with Japan so there should be no taxes applied provided the invoice states Made in Japan.
Should you get charged you can claim it back from your local customs office provided you have the paperwork.

I import/export for my work and have also purchased home theatre gear from the USA that is tax exempt with the FTA again provided it's made there. Items they sell made OS but shipped from USA still attract GST and duties.
