Fluorocarbon or mono on a Baitcaster?

G'day all,

I just need to preface this discussion with the fact that I own many baitcasters all spooled with various levels of braid and have recently taken a shine again to mono and straight through fc on my spinning gear in the surf.

So the big question is not should I spool with something other than braid, but rather is mono or fc better on a Baitcaster and if so why and which is the best brand to buy. I am looking at 8lb sort of line class.

I don't know if it would be any better than braid, but you certainly shouldn't encounter any problems. A mate of mine hates braid with a passion, and has his black max spooled with about 15-20lb mono with no problems at all. You are certainly very unlikely to get any birdsnests with mono or fc. If going mono of fc, it might be wise to source the most supple line you can though. Cheers, Jim

I find that with surf fishing, mono/fc is so much better than braid that I no longer use it. Braid pulls hooks in the surf. For hard bodies or blades/vibes I always use braid as it makes the lures work better.

I still have a affectionate area in my heart for Mono on some baitcasters...

Everyone's different, however FC is a little stiff and coily when casting with.

I have to point out: fluorocarbon line, especially on heavier poundage, is a lot "jumpier" than nylon in equivalent thickness.

Personal preference would be fc after a few good session it breaks in nicely .
Plenty of different brands to choose from sunline sniper is great especially the
Larger spools that it comes in Dragoncall sd4 fc is also great requiring less break
In time but only available in 100 m spools and a pain to source .

I have been through a similar process trying to find the right line for a bass setup. For finesse applications I found 12lb fluro far to jumpy and would over run constantly. 10lb mono cast brilliantly but was extremely stretchy so I wasnt super pleased with that either. I ended up settling on some 14.5lb suffix xl strong. Its very thin and supple for its breaking strain at 0.28mm so casts well and stretches about right to prevent pullING hooks but still feels sensitive. If I were to go lighter like 8lb, id probably try fc again as im pretty sure if i tried a lighter one it would drop into that sweet spot of castability/stretch/sensitivity again.
