Best of the best B/C

As the title suggests I'm after a top line baitcast reel. have used most sub $400 reels but am willing to spend up to $850 now and don't really have much idea on reels in this price range. Only limiting factors are that it has to be a low profile and have a gear ratio around 5.5:1. Will be used for cod so drag is fairly important.

First of all - wow! That is a big budget!!! With that much money on the stake, we better find you a reel that you absolutely love

But honestly, unless you are looking at some of the rare, limited edition models, you are unlikely to need to, or even be able to, spend that much on a low profile baitcasting reel.

A few models popped into my mind that might interest you:
- TD Zillion PE Special 100H(L) (super tough gears, decent drag, 6.3 ratio though)
- Daiwa Z 200H or Z2020H (JDM) (hunk of a reel, tough gears, 6 kg drag, 6.4 ratio, a big low profile reel)
- TD Zillion J dream 5.3 (5.3 ratio)
- Curado 300e or 301e (lefty) (workhorse, easiest on the pocket, you can upgrade the drag to have a drag output about 8 kg)

There are definitely more to list but I will leave that to others.

Buy 2 x 2014 calcutta conquest. I got the 101, which I can palm comfortably.

I love the look of them but I think normoh is only considering low profile BCs, the conquest, unfortunately, is a bit round.

If you want to buy from Aus you will be able to fill that budget on a fairly high end Daiwa or Shimano. But if you are choosing to buy abroad, you will find it almost impossible to spend over 650.

Even then you are starting to dab into the Limited Edition BFS Setups which won't be appropriate for what you're after.

You could always look at the Daiwa Steez TN LE model and then do a drag upgrade on it.

Or like mentioned above and look at a Z2020, Zillion J Dream or New Model Zillion which is being released soon might be a better option.

Check out the Tatula HD and new Zillion TWS, too.

Are you going to just use it for freshwater? If so, like Kyle said, say Steeeeeeeez.

If you like round reels hunt down a Monoblock, easily the smoothest reel I have ever used. Maybe a Lin10 might be an option if you want some more power.

Just read it has to be low profile, I would go a MB IS63, only because I can't think of anything that has the ratio you want in a low profile.

Yea sorry should've added that it's all fresh and had the budget set high to allow for upgrades etc. I know the Calcutta reels are nice but 100% Low profile. Where would everyone rate the steez compared to the top zillions for all day casting? Also anyone used a calais?

I've got a DC Calais and it is a magnificent piece of engineering. Heavier than some of the other options but smooth as silk and more than enough to handle big cod. They also cast a mile with the DC.
