Micro Guides and Knots
I'm looking to purchase a new rod in the communing weeks and a few of the rods that have made my "top 5" list have micro guides.
A quick search of the internet suggests that I need to learn how to tie a FG knot or one of it's derivatives. Is this true, or is it just internet hype. This is a concern to me as I fall into the "can't teach a old dog new tricks" age group and have been using a double uni for years. Years of tying a knot gives one the ability to easily tie one in the field and total confidence that each and every knot is good. I currently use a double uni for braid to leader and it looks pretty compact to me. Is anyone using a double uni or slim beauty to tie on leader for use on a micro guide rod? |

I've got a pinster with micro guides. I use a seaguar knot 90% of the time which I tie with a daiwa knot tool. The other 10% is an FG knot.
I like the gen black rods but I won't buy another because of the micro guides. Macro guides for me all the way now ![]() Even with a slim knot it will still get hung up now and again when tea-bagging light micro vibes. May not be an issue for you depending on how you fish but it really rubs me the wrong way - usually have to do a little rod jiggle to get the knot past the guide and that jiggle usually coincides with prime bream holding depth .... It ..... Really ...... $&@#5 me. |

I used the double uni with my rod, didn't have to many hassles but there was the occasional cast where the knot would catch onto the guides. After a few casts it seemed to fly though guides easier after kind of being "worn in".
I ended up using the fg knot after watching this vid... after a bit of practice it was a piece of cake.. Simple way of tying FG knot: http://youtu.be/3Yn5SapCFBA |

kaneit knot is awesome. Can tie one without doubled braid quicker than a double uni. My majorcraft skyroads have micros and no issues with that knot. Any old dog can learn that one

I'm running the 13 envy's which have micro's and use a 5 turns surgeons knot and seems to go ok, rarely will i get a knot hang up. must be tied well and no excess tags though.

Unfortunately, these guides became a standard for all decent rods. Not only they can be a problem for knots running through, they originally designed by Fuji for thin, soft japs pe only.I noticed the casting distance with fc or mono was not so good. imo

FG is the go, way thinner and stronger than any other knot I have used. If you practice it isnt hard and doesnt take much longer than any other knot.
I can throw 20lb+ leaders through micro guides without issue, so they dont limit your leader choice at all, and the improvement in sensitivity is definitely noticeable in my opinion. |

I'm running uni to uni up to 12lb through micro guides for snapper/jewies. I don't seem to be having these line/guides issues everyone seems to be harping on about every time micro guides are raised as a topic.
I don't get it.

I tend to think that the FG knot is a massive over kill when it comes to bream fishing...
I run micros on all my bream rods and have absolute no trouble with a double uni knot, I fish very long leaders of 4lb up to 10lb, sometimes more if needed and don't have any dramas at all with the double uni knot catching up on guides.

It does also have to do with peoples casting styles I run fg so i have no problems....however I have a friend that when casting over head always catches but only when over head he runs uni to uni. ... so go figure...
Just learn fg and u wont have a worry |

You will find out what you need when you get the rod. I got a skyroad m702t (super tiny guides) and strangely depending on which reel I put on it I need an fg or similar knot. With a sustain 1000 I can use an improved Albright in 4lb but with a luvius 2004 I have to use the fg with the 4lb.
The fg is an awesome knot which you should learn anyway. Super strong and removes any potential guide issues (which means you can buy any rod you want.) |

I'm a bit of a gumby tying knots, but with micro guides I've found it's worth the little bit of extra time to tie a slim knot... I use a slim beauty...
