Getting Your Hull Re-rated?

Hi guys,
We are in the process of building a complete false floor and 70L in our Explorer 385 which will add a decent amount of weight to the boat, especially when the tank is full. We currently have a 25hp on the back but by the looks of things we are going to have to upgrade so are we allowed to beef up the transom and maybe some structural work to put a bigger motor on it? Like a 35hp - 40hp? Or do we have to contact Quintrex and get a Marine Engineer to inspect it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Anders

From what I've heard Quintrex won't do it, best bet is to find an engineer that will up the rating. It's really only necessary for insurance but if you do have an accident (god forbid) and you injure someone or worse you really need insurance!!

I used a guy by the Name of Nick Lockyer. See link: http://kpsmaritime.com.au/

He is based out of Coomera on the Northern Gold Coast, but I know he travels a bit so he might do it on his way to another job, or recommend someone where you are.

He makes it am easy process with no hassle and supply's a new compliance plate as part of the arrangement.

This is a link to Bruce Collins in Taree, he is a structural engineer. I'm not sure if he does marine engineering but someone at Steber Craft or Shearwater Marine at Taree may know of one.

Is there no one at Forster?

Thanks mate I have only spoken to the boys at Barclay's and they said you'd have to talk to Quintrex and they will only rate it up 10hp so I really haven't had a look. Just curious as to how much mucking around we might have to do but depends on my Dad too, he's keeps changing his mind

Talk to Al at Numurkah customised boats in Melbourne. It's a very easy process and surprisingly cheap.

The transom is easy to strengthen the limiting factor will be the thickness of the aluminum on the bottom of the hull...

Mate, I did probably the same boat build as yourself when I was younger, had the transom beefed up and plated which can be done, But like said earlier the governing factor is the bottom of the hull. I got 2 and a bit years out of mine with a 40 four stroke Yamaha, then tore it open like a tin can on the joining hull weld to the side wall, you can always patch it up but it will just run the crack somewhere else. I just called it a day with that boat stripped it back to just the basic boat and sold it. Here's a pick of it just before i sold it.
