JDP 2012 Luvias vrs 2014 Caldia

Hey folks,

Daiwa (Japan) have recently released an upgrade to the Caldia. I was set to purchase the 2012 version Luvias (2004) however this new release has me questioning if I should save a few bucks and go with new Caldia.

The Caldia has one less bearing and weighs 15 grams more. Both are mag sealed. The Caldia is about $65 AUD cheaper.

Thoughts?

Yeah mate, I have a 2012 Luvias already. Love it. The new caldia has only just been released so I haven't had a hold of one yet. I didn't realise the Caldia was made in China. Might stick with the Luvi if that's the case!

It is not broke don't fix it

I know the old model for sure

But what's $65 between having what u want and settling for something that ur always going too be like I want another luvias

There was a well priced 2004h on here seem too go for around the 200 -250 mark or if u look on japaneese sites ull find new for that with dollar so high if u don't use pay pal the scammers that charge like 4 cents below the actual rate

Luvias. At jap prices they're a steal. Why risk getting a reel you might not love when you know the Luvias.

I have the old Caldia and the 2012 Luvias and the Caldia is poor in comparison. The new one might be better?? But there's a lot more to quality than the bearing count.

Yeah of course. I'm obviously leaning towards the luvi, and yeah the bearing count isn't too significant, although in Daiwa reels I do believe it is important as they just don't throw in bearing willy nilly and they use quality CCRB bearings in their higher end reels.

I was hoping someone had used both reels and could compare them.

On the paper, the new Caldia does not appear to have any significant improvement at all comparing to the old model in terms of design, material and "technology". Dare I say it is still made in China. (I have to point out that I am happy with mine (older model) for the amount of money I have paid)

Luvias, however, although did not impress me greatly like other made in Japan JDMs (such as Ryoga, Stella and Metanium), is made in Japan after all - the material used and build quality is clearly superior.

If cost is not high on your selection criteria, IMHO choosing Luvias will certainly result in a happier purchase

Mate, I don't know how did you reach this conclusion.

Where in my previous comment even suggested that I was comparing Luvias to Stella? I was simply saying the Luvias did not impress me as much as other JDMs I own in terms of build quality and overall in-hand feeling. Follow your logic, I must be comparing Luvias to baitcasters like Ryoga and Metanium, too?

I know Chief, I bought it because I read yours and G's feedback on the reel. A good reel by all means, maybe I just allowed my own expectation to grow a bit too high before receiving the reel.

The new Calida has a ball bearing in the line roller now, CRBB system and digigear II. The differences between the two are an extra ball bearing, a different body and where it's made. Caldia would be my pick.

Or wait for the new Luvias next year.

Comparison maybe, but it is a comparison of the build quality and over all feel and get this - in my hands! I cannot understand why you are so caught up on "correcting" someone's personal opinion?

You don't sound like you are in a good mood today. Coat your rudeness with some fake politeness does not cover it, you know?

I will just leave it at that. I hope you can find a better mood with the day progressing.
