Getaway Outdoors Bream Classics 2014 Rd 1 Report.

Round one of the Getaway Outdoor Bream Classics Kayak competition was held at Garvey Park on the Swan river on Sunday Feb 9th featuring the largest field ever seen at a kayak bream competition in WA with 52 competitors hitting the water in fine but at times windy conditions.

As usual the competitors were greeted on arrival by the smell of freshly cooked bacon , eggs , toast and coffee provided by the hard working Getaway Outdoors Team as well as snack packs .

The low tide was a blessing in disguise exposing more beach for the 52 kayaks to be rigged on .

After a very welcome breakfast and a briefing by tournament director Craig the competitors including for the first time two ladies congregated on the water for a 7.00am start .

Set on our way the majority of the field elected to go upstream with only about a dozen heading down stream .
The days fishing turned out to be very hard with good fish widely spread and numerous small bream ,grunter and mulloway frustrating the anglers.
Only 22 anglers weighed in a total of 36 fish for a total of 15.870 kg
Top ten anglers
10th Paul McCollough 1 fish for .685kg Searing Tackle prize pack.

9th Stu May 2 fish for .745kg Searing Tackle prize pack. Stu fished Down stream using Ecogear SX40's

8th Sean Higgins 2 fish for .905kg Searing Tackle prize pack.

Equal 6th Szarn Tink and Ian Sewell both 3 fish for 1.030 kg Searing Tackle prize pack.
Szarn was upstream and Ian Down stream.

5th Tom Bestwick 2 fish for 1.035 kg Searing Tackle prize pack.

4th Brendon Chambers 2 fish for 1.20 kg .Best fish .610 kg. Searing Tackle prize pack, CRC Salt Eliminator and Getaway outdoors Brag mat .
Fished down stream along flats edges .Caught one fish on Pontoon 21 Crack Jack 48 SP DR and one on Z-Man 2.5" Grubz in bloodworm.

3rd Brett Ozane .3 fish for 1.470kg .$100 Getaway Outdoors voucher, $50 prize pack .
Brett fishing his first tournament after 2 years away from the tournament scene went down stream using Daiwa HB's along the banks and flats . Brett's best fish went .665kg.

2nd Tim Styliano 3 fish for 1.582kg best fish .635kg.$250 Getaway Outdoors voucher.
Tim's strategy was to focus on quality rather than quantity as he had found lots of small bream down river lately. So he fished upriver. Started with hardbodies thrown at banks and slow rolled out which accounted for his first legal 29 cm forker. He changed to soft plastics when wind picked up and fished deeper snags picking up fish in a hundred metre stretch of the river he had fished previously. Best two from this area went 33 fork and 30 fork .

1st Shane Owens .3 fish for 1.950kg and he also won big bream with a solid .850kg specimen .$250 cash ,$250 Getaway Outdoors voucher.
Shane fishing his back yard showed once again the consistency that won him AOY in 2013.Having failed to find many bream down stream during the Classics boat comp the previous weekend he decided to fish upstream and fish hard bodies in preference to his favoured soft plastics. The fish he weighed in were caught through out the day.

Showing the lengths some guys will go to Complete Angler's Ben Hough arrives at the weigh in 41 mins late after paddling all the way down to the Windan Bridge to fish. On his return trip Bens yak was swamped twice by ski boats .

Searing Tackle Damiki / Pontoon 21 prize Pack .

It was great to see so many new faces enjoying the Kayak Bream Comp experience and an excellent result for Craig of the Bream classics Organisation and the Getaway Outdoors Group for the persistence , time and resources they have put into these events that have grown from average fields of a dozen 4 years ago to now over 50 !

Thanks to Getaway outdoors for the breakfasts , snack packs and prizes and the outstanding Early Bird offers .
Searing Tackle for the generous Lure prize packs and CRC for providing the very effective Tackle Guard and CRC Salt Terminator give away that ensured nobody went home empty handed .
Thanks to Craig Leatt Hayter for giving up his weekends to run these events and all the background work dealing with local authorities etc to find us new water to fish.
Time to start pre fishing for the next round to be held on the Murray River 13th April 2014 .See you There!

Great turnout from 4 locals at Walpole ABT in 2009 to 53 with a few regulars unable to make it, should top 60 next time in Perth.

I have seen the results and can't believe how tough it was on the day its a credit to Shane Owens to scrape a solid bag together for the win and well done to to the other podium finishers.

Well done again to Getaway outdoors, Craig and others involved.

Although i never made it to this one am looking forward to the Murray River round, with news that two of our top tournament anglers will be sponsored by Native Watercraft and will be taking no prisoners on their " reverse peddle game changers " it will be an interesting side show on the day and will look forward to the battle of the kayaks, may the best peddles win

Great report Brendon and see everybody in April .

After taking a few years out from comps i though i'd have a go again this year, and what better comp to start with than Garvey Park, as the last comp i fished was also this venue, 3 sleepless days after my daughter was born almost 2 years ago to the day.

I certainly wanted to try and do well in this comp, so i took 2 days of work the fortnight before and prefished the area, the first day was just covering ground and looking for banks or flats holding fish, then the second day, with Fishostu for company was more about settling on a few banks to fish comp day, and thinking of a plan. We got a reasonable bag on the last pre-fish day, and i though the tides would be similar to comp day which was almost right, just about half a foot lower!!

So come comp day, i was pumped and feeling somewhat positive, untill i realised there were 53 entries!! What a field, certainly a long way from the 8 at the Walpole ABT!! So i kept saying to myself stick to the plan and all will play out as it will!!

So Craig gives us the go go go and we head out, i have a bank in mind and hit the throttle, probably overdoing it a bit and by the time i pull up to cast im toasted...... Fish the first bank the full length with the stiff soueaster, its super choppy and about half way down i hook my first solid fish after a procession of grunter and rat bream. After a short fight i get my 1st legal at 27cm, i fish on too the end of the bank and return into a foot of southerly fanning spray and plug 300m back up for another run.

Half way back down off a small branch in the shallows i nail a solid fish on the khamsin, slugs it out to the yak and i get a solid 34fkr in the well, im stoked!! Fish this bank again and after a few more grunter and squeakers i head to spot two where nearby i run into Brendon! So we fish together in a general area of banks, flats and wood and he proceeds to land two solid fish in the 30's and loses another! I fish around for a while waiting for a family of baitos to leave an area, once they finish catching nothing and skipping stones for few hours i finally get to have a crack. Throwing the sx40 and daiwa Dr F Minnow i fish up and down the bank, landing another 2 x 25.5's before hooking a better fish on a sandy flat that gave me my bag at 28frk.

This was about 10am ish and from here it seemed to really shut down, i caught plenty of 20's on the flats, with the occasional 24 but no bigger fish. Fished the deeper snags nearby for nothing as well, and around 11.00 i thought i'd head back, so i checked the smaller 27 i caught first to see how it was holding up and it was now a 26! I'd had this happen before and lost a fish at an albany comp i think from it, so i thought i might just hurry up and try for upgrade. I started back fishing the original bank again which had 3 yaks working it but nothing, crossed the river and worked the shallower banks again and no luck.

12 noon and i check the squeaker in the well and bugger me if he isint under 26... Im thinking SH!T!! So i start back pretty quick just fishing a few banks here and there and eventually after no upgrade get back at 1.30pm looking for a weigh bag real quick! First one to weigh in and everyones saying it was super tough and hadn't heard of any full bags. Got my 1.47kg on the board and the 665gm lunker just in case. i was stoked to learn i came third, i saw Shanes well when he got in and mate it was packed! Awesome effort by him, he really knows the river up there.. Tim had a solid bag and fished well for his bag, Brendon was one fish short of third or better with his bag!

Great comp, thanks to Getaway Outdoors and Craig Leatt Hayter for there efforts to make it happen, it was an awesome day, 53 yaks is a lot of yaks!!!

Big thanks to Mayfly Tackle and Nitro Rods and Halco for their continued support!!

Hi Chunky welcome to BM and the yak bream comp scene .
AS bender pointed out the main item you will require is a 25 l water capacity container and some sort of aerator or pump to keep your fish in good nick and type 1 PFD.

The guys are very keen to help out new faces so don't be shy on the day.

The main thing for new guys to the comp scene is to be aware of the etiquette so far as staying more than 30 m or two casting lengths away from other competitors and not to drop in on their drift .IE if they are working along a bank not to start fishing too close in the direction they are travelling .
If you have any doubt about what you are doing a quick "hey mate is it ok ?"or "do you mind if I fish here " goes a long way and yakkers tend to be a little more relaxed on fishing near each other than the boaters esp if they know each other .

PS bring some wet weather gear and warm clothes as well as your hat and sunscreen as I will be fishing that round and I am the ultimate weather jinx....

Cheers Brendon

Inflatables are the way to go Donga .
Any Australian certified type 1 PFD meets the rules but as you are expected to wear it the inflatables are much more comfortable .
Most foam kayak fishing specific PFD's are type 3 so check the tag inside before buying.
If you can track one down the Hobie inflatable life jacket fishing vests made by Stormy are the great for fishos but have been in short supply for the last 12 months or so .
You can find the non Hobie branded one online if you want to order it in .
http://www.stormylifejackets.com.au/...t-100n-as1512/

I have a spare type 1 inflatable (waist pouch style) you can borrow on the day if you cant get hold of a Type one PFD in time .Just send me a PM to remind me to bring it.
Sounds like there will be 3 slayer 13's down there ATM.
Cheers Brendon
