Converting a Floating lure to a suspending one
Guys.
Im only getting into the HB side of things and as such have quickly grown fond of the suspending type of lures I have one question.. I have seen some posts about people making a floating lure a suspending one by doing something to them (weights???) What’s the best way to do this to my floating lures .. also does this mean that if I can’t find the lure in suspending model, that I can convert them so as to speak?? or does this not work for all lures any help appreciated... Cheers |

I use a bit of putty under the lure. you can change the way a lure suspends by placing the putty under the bib, belly or tail.

Test them in a sink or bucket of water. You want just enough putty so that the lure just sinks in fresh water, it will then suspend in salt water. Also think about where the putty is as you want the lure to suspend horizontally not nose or tail down.

Thats it??? just that stuff, that looks easy enough.

I like using Strike Pro adhesive dots. They come in a few different sizes. I buy mine from www.fishin.com.au
They're nice and easy to use and I can get the balance and the buoyancy close to perfect. They stay attached well too, much better than some other brands. Last edited by Windknot; 02-02-2014 at 08:20 PM. Reason: Link didn't work |

You want it to look natural. You are pausing the lure hopefully in the strike zone and want it to sit there teasing the bream. Think about what a bait fish would be doing and weight accordingly.

Front treble off, crimp split shot as small as you like, test boyancy, done.

It's just an easy quick way of doing it, an old trouties trick. Take front treble and ring off, leaves the small attachment point. Push split shot onto attatchment, squeeze. Sinks to fast lighten split shot, still to buoyant go heavier.
While I like the putty and suspend dots split shots work just as well, Dinsmores makes some friggin tiny ones. If its sinking vertically upsize treble size (like on a stickbait). If its on say a deep diver the bib will even out levels on the retrieve.

easiest and cheapest way.. Wrap a little solder around the stem of the belly treble

Usually I will put larger trebles on first if i want to slow the rise of a floating lure (or make a barely floating one suspend or slow sink). Usually change the tail one first and see how it goes.

I have some solder wire in the tackle box and just wrap it around the front treble as many times as required.
