Hey guys I'm just starting out, and I was just wondering if I could get some tips on places to fish, how to fish them, what types of lures etc to use?!!
I've gone out and bought myself a shimano catana rod and shimano rarenium reel spoiled with 6lb Brade!

G'day mate, welcome to the forums
What size reel did you end up buying? And also what is the line rating of your catana?
Which city do you live in? (Might help people give you some spots to try)

Not a problem mate, yeh the combo sounds good. Nothing wrong with that at all.
Perhaps A few of the melbourne based guys can chime in here and help you out with a few spots to start off with.
As for your line, generally with braided lines a leader of between 40cm and 2m is a good idea.(anything between 3&6lb ought to do)
Most small lures will catch the humble bream, a few of the more popular (and expensive at times) brands are:
Cranka
Ecogear
Austackle
Hurricane
Z-man
Just to name a few. Which lure to choose really depends on where you are fishing.

G'day mate. Just looked up where Berwick is. You're out there eh? Bream are an estuary fish so you want to be looking in towards the bay. Don't know the SE at all but Patterson river could be your closest. Google Patterson river bream and see what you get

CBD docklands is my haunt. Lots of vertical structure to work. If you go there I can give you a few ideas. Haven't done any successful river breamin myself so maybe someone more local to you will chime in. Defo bream in the patto - no idea how hard they are to extract tho. Welcome to BM

Aha. Too easy then. You only need to buy one lure. Its called a strike pro micro vibe (preferably JU015TL colour) - lol.

Great time to start at the docks ... water is nice and clear - just wander around out the front of NAB and look at the pylons around dock 9 which is the dock in front of etihad. The whole area and the 3 sides of the dock hold bream... and you'll see them feeding on the pylons.

Once you find the fish its just a case of tea-bagging the micro vibe in front of them. Pretty much you let it fall on a free-spool. If it stops falling, jerks or does something odd, chances are its a bream and you should strike. I'm crap at this bit. My catches mainly come when a greedy one inhales it and pretty much hooks itself. If it gets to the bottom you can try a couple of short hops and falls again, but generally it means no fish on that pylon so time to move on.

Sounds easy but they can be finicky - it can be a bit of a challenge and they are easy to spook with a clumsy presentation, sometimes hard to find and sometimes they will just swim around your lure anyway.... Can drive you a bit crackers at times.

If you get a chance at work, even if you don't have your gear, but the water clarity is good have a good wander around the area with some polarised sunnies - check along pontoons and pylons, down the sides of moored boats ... anything really. You'll see plenty of bream and it is a good way to start to appreciate their behaviour - what they do and don't like, how close to structure they sit etc...

I'm trying to get some of the BM experts and noobs together for a docks catchup after work so feel free to invite yourself along (http://www.breammaster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57822). Hopefully we'll get some expert tips

Other than that if you're ever fishing out the front of NAB pre-work you'll see me sooner or later .... I'm usually there 3 or 4 mornings a week from about 7.15 - 8am, happy to have a chat. I'm still very much a beginner and not a consistent bream-catcher but I can show you enough to make you dangerous

I'll be the guy shuffling from pylon to pylon with a rod.

Cheers
Dave

Good luck today Wish I had time for a fish but won't be hitting the docks until Tuesday. Give the vibes a go and let us know how you get on.

Cheers

Managed to get a quick hour or so at the docklands today!
But to no avail!
No sure if I was trying to hit the right spot or what not??
Didn't see much going on around there so maybe I picked the wrong spot!!
I was near where thee is a couple of "charter boats" moor and there is about 30 odd pylons just sticking up in the water! Any body with any ideas??
Going to try again tomorrow so any clues would help!
Cheers guys!!

What time were you there and what lure and technique were you trying?

I was at pretty much the same spot from about 7.15 - 8.15 and landed two decent (34cm) bream on micro vibe so the fish were on the bite in the morning at least.

Well ... Nothing's guaranteed

I've had plenty of donut sessions at that spot too but recently it's been fishing pretty well. May just be that the fish weren't there, but a few things to check:

What leader do you have? A rod length of 6lb fluorocarbon is a good starting point.

What colour micro vibe?

Be prepared to move around. In an hour I'll cover at least a dozen or more pylons.

If you're casting to the whitecap pylons (the silver pointed hat ones) you need a very soft presentation. I've yet to successfully present a lure to one of those pylons without spooking the grazing fish.

It's easiest to start off just dropping your vibe on an open spool down the pylons on the pontoon or dockside (no casting at all). If it stops dropping then strike. Do two attempts per pylon then move to the next. After a while once you get a few fish you'll have your favourite pylons

And when I say next to the pylon I really mean next to. I start with my lure about 1 to 2 cm from the pylon. As it drops on the open spool I am very careful to ensure I keep the line directly above and tension free - any tension to either side will pull the lure away from the pylon and more importantly the fish. I generally do both sides of each pylon.

Did you actually sight any bream at all in the area?

Haha .. cursed myself.

Was down there this morning for an hour pre-work. Took a mate to help him get onto a fish.

Donuts all round. Not many fish sighed until about 10mins from the end when they started showing up but couldn't tempt any. Definitely cooled down since the weather did.

Still .... fish in the area ... only a matter of persistance

How did you go PommyTom ? Did you get a chance to get out and did you get onto any ?
