Reel suggestion - jigging
sorry but this is not bream related ..
just after a reel for my demon blood jig rod which is rated PE-6-8 & for jigs weighing 210-250 grams... * a 6500 will suit better than a 4500. will be putting 65-80lb braid on it * don't want to spend heaps but would realllly like a 6500 saltiga ![]() * not keen on the new 6500 catalina as it is HIGH GEAR ONLY .. more suited for popping * shimano can't not go on a daiwa rod .. or can it ![]() i've only looked quickly but these are the reels that have come up .. old saragosa 14000/18000, new saragosa 20000, spheros 14000/18000, salina3 16000, spinfisher 950, old catalina 6500 if one comes up on ebay it's only for local charters so it's not like i will be going out every weekend to jig. i have the lighter combo sorted already which is the Daiwa Capricorn 4500 on a Monster Mesh PE 3-4 with 30-50lb braid for the smaller jigs any comments appreciated

I reckon you've pretty much covered the reels I would've suggested. There are a couple second hand saltiga expeditions around at the moment, but they still hold their value. You might have to go with a shimano reel on a daiwa rod. I've done it before, and wasn't struck by lightning!! The gosa might be you're best option. Cheers

I use a Daiwa Exceler 5000T. Under $150 on the web. See http://daiwa.com/reel/detail.aspx?id=500 Plus $15 for Carbontex drag. Takes 300yds of 80 lb PowerPro. For a good deal; http://www.tackledirect.com/daiwa-ex...ing-reel.html# only $119.

thanks tchoklat .. is the amount of line retrieved ok for jigging ?
Ratio seems slow, but 106 cm retrieved per crank seems high .. it's working ok for you ? looks like a good enough reel .. how heavy jigs are you running ? 300y of 80lb is more than enough ..

Sure do. No lies, I talked about something very similar in a drunken conversation with a couple of blokes 6-7 years ago!!!! I called it an upside down overhead reel!! They called me a pissed minda. Guess i had the last laugh, well sort of.
![]() Back to the real world, think the guys at Ray n Anne's have given them a workout. I really like the concept of them, reckon they should be solid. |

Stradic 8000 will only be slightly bigger than a 4500 daiwa? Would prefer a 14/18/20000 for the big PE 6-8 rod I think ...

Yep, Spot on. Have a stradic 8000fi, 50lb max for that reel. I bottom bash with mine, 50lb on one spool and 30 on the other. I find I mostly use the spool with 30, but fish it hard. They are a strong feeling reel, but jigging 80lb would severely cut it's lifespan. It's a hard position you're in. Do you spend big on a reel that will only be used every now and then, or get something cheaper that might not last. Good luck mate.

Maybe I just fish the light combo that I already have this time round and if I enjoy jigging so much and also get bricked by the bigger fish, I'll consider a saltiga/Stella ...

For $330 you can pick up a Salina 3 Jig Combo with PE8 rod and 16000 reel. Good value for money combo if your not going to be using it every day.

Anyone own the spinfisher ssm 850/950 and would recommend it?
Man these are going for cheap and it includes braid too ! If I'm after a cheap jigging reel this fits the bill. Do they lay braid properly? The spool looks really narrow..
