Light surf, beach, rocks rod for lures?

I am thinking about adding a new rod to my collection as I have a bit of a gap I need to fill.

I have a Daiwa Wicked Weasel (2 - 6kg, 208cm, 2 - 14g lures) with a Calida 2004 on it for light weight plastics and hard body work around the estuaries.

Also have a Daiwa Sensor surf 1002 (6 - 10kg, 305cm, 20 - 90g lures) for chasing jewies and large tailor off the rocks but feel like I need something lighter to have a bit of fun with smaller tailor and flatties out of the surf and off the rocks.

I predominantly fish lures but occasionally chuck a bit of bait on.

I am thinking something around the 9ft mark maybe even another 10 footer but needs to be stiff enough to get the lures out but light enough to have some fun with smaller fish.

I am generally casting small slugs for tailor, and 1/2oz jug heads with plastics for flatties.

Anyone got a similar setup they can recommend?

I asked pretty much the same question in another forum and someone told me to get a 10ft Rovex Egi Squid Wrangler....only $70 from Dinga. Got the rod, have to say it feels really nice for such a cheap rod and looks like it will do the job of tossing light lures in the surf.

Maybe a good option if you want to go cheap.

This is currently what I am using, except mine is one of the superseded models in the lightest of the series. In these new models I would opt for the SJ325L.

Get yourself a feel of the Lateo pirates 4-8kg 9 foot model. Seriously such a nice rod and perfect for spinning metals in the surf or poppers/plastics off the rocks

If you're on a tighter budget, look at the 9' zing they come in two line ratings. I've got the heavier one and don't mind it. The lightest slugs I cast are 20g, and also 1/2oz jigheads with jerkshads. This rod is more for 30g up to 55g though. I reckon the lighter model could be more what your looking for.

Thanks guys much appreciated……tossing up between the Daiwa Lateo and the Nitro Sniper. Thinking the Daiwa might win given its a bit cheaper.

I think i will get the 96ML, has anyone got one of these what size real do you recommend, I was thinking maybe a Daiwa Calida 3000?

A 3000 size Daiwa would be perfect, IMO. I run a 3012H Daiwa Certate on my similar Seajigger. I prefer the higher retrieve rate for spinning.

I had a feel of the Seajigger 325L yesterday and it is seriously a nice rod, it is rated 4-8kg and loads up really nicely without effort, so you can really have fun with this rod. It also throws 20-60 grams which is perfect imo.

Another rod you could look at is an imported Lateo, it might cost a bit more than the ones we have here but you can get a 90M which is rated 5-9kg and can throw 10-50 grams. Mine cost around $330 to land in Australia.

As for the 96ML model, a 3000 size reel would suit it. A high speed reel would be even better, have a look at the new Daiwa Blast or the Caldia SHA

I just pick up a shimano revolution coastal 902 for 175 bucks. Im matching with a 4000 biomaster. It's rated to 50 grams. Havent used it yet but the rubber grips feel great. Id seriously consider having a look at one.

I bought a battler shorehunter over the weekend for chasing long tail and tuna in the bay but after using it I'm quite sure it'd be perfect for what you're after too. Mine's matched to a 3500HD Certate and although an expensive combo it's pretty impressive.

Seajigger 325 is a beauty. Light, casts well and perfect for the lures you describe, although above 50g is starting to get a little heavy for it in my experience.

I was in at Anglers Warehouse last week and they didn't have any Daiwa Lateo Pirates rods in stock so they are ordering in a 96ML for me to have a look. Although i don't know when I can have a look because they no longer open on weekends…..seriously what kind of tackle shop is closed on a weekend?

I had a feel of the sea jigger while I was there and I felt that it was too close to my Sensor Surf, I really didn't feel that there was much difference.

While I was there I had a look at a Samaki Zing SZG 902SM 9'0'' 2 piece Medium 8-15lb, That looked pretty nice and close to what I am after. I would be interested to hear what everyone thinks of these?

Would love to get a hold of a Nitro Sniper to see what it is like, anyone know who might stock these on the Gold Coast?
