Lure/Plastics Tuition

After fishing mainly bait and then offshore I've recently converted to plastics/lures and chasing estuary species and bass.

I'm really struggling fishing anything other than pontoons and was curious if there's anyone on the Gold Coast or Brisbane that would tutor me for a day. I have a good selection of plastics/hard bodies but have trouble knowing when/where to use what and where to find fish at said times of the year. I've managed to suss out bass on both topwater and cranks (Dunks) but this is about as far as I've gone with hard bodies. Plastics are very hit and miss except for around pontoons where I seem to go well.

I'm happy to supply a boat and pay someone for the help.

If anyone knows/does anything like this please let me know.

Ideally someone could come with me to where I usually fish (has pontoons, weed, flats, rock walls etc) and just give me some advice/fish with me and I'll reimburse for their trouble.

Thumbs up

Hey mate. Living in Melbourne I am
Not much help. But the advice I can give is not to get disheartened. Don't give up. Just spend as much time on the water as possible. It takes time to sus out a waterway. (Best times, tides, depth and so on). Just keep at it and be observant. Things will start to fall into place. The area that I do a lot of breaming in can be extremely frustrating at times due to
The size of the waterway. (Gippy lakes). Just keep fishing and learning and you will soon know your area like the back of your hand. Good luck.

Cheers. Chris.

Sounds good Jack! Couple of donuts other than stingrays has got frustrating haha.

Thanks Chris, I've been trying to get on the water and making sure I stick to my lures/plastics so fingers crossed it clicks soon. Just wanna make sure I'm doing the right thing and giving myself the best chance.

Hi mate,

Best advice I can give is already here mate. And this forum is filled with posts about techniques and other cool stuff.

One thing I can offer is the importance of jigweights and the size of the sp you use. Grab one of every single softies that you have and then in a pool work every one of them on increasing jig weight amounts. you will be surprised how much the action will change with an increase of .8-1.5 grams on some of the sp's on the market. Then use that to figure out when to use what weight if the water is clear, dirty, flowing fast mid tide, low tide, no movement etc. Fish respond to different stimuli in different conditions and figuring out what weight to use is something I am still learning, which is why I like this sport so much.

And the GC/Brisbane area is full of good anglers man, if you are on the water don;t be afraid to have a chat with blokes if you see them on the water, obviously don't just blast into their drift but if you see blokes at the ramp or wherever ask them what they were doing. Not everyone will say or even give you the time of day but 9/10 blokes will give up some sort of info.

And for the record it took me a lot of hair pulling frustrating times to bang my first fish on soft plastics, once you figure out the motions it gets easier, sort of.

Good luck mate. Post the pics of your first fish on artificials when you get em!

Hi mate, I started sp and lures about 2 years ago...I learned from YouTube, and do lots of practice in the pool. I wish that I have someone teaching me too...but my hours are odd.

Local tackle shop might be worth asking? If the blokes there fish, they should be willing to share some info on spots, tides and techniques, not just "you need this lure, and this one and this one...".
Practice. Spend the time. It WILL come together eventually, and then you will just start to catch more and more. A lot of it is just a confidence thing I reckon.
Looking forwards to your first successful trip report.

Thanks for the responses everyone! I never really though of the pool idea. I can test my different rods/lures and see how much action I need to work each one that way, brilliant idea.

I'm also going to go back to the basics and back to the gulp prawns/crabbys and the squidgy prawns until I catch some fish then maybe swap over to some of the more "popular" plastics and work my way from there.

Really do appreciate all the advice and I'm pumped to go fishing again and make this work
