I'm being Bullied
Hi Gents, I'm being bullied by a rough and tumble gang of Duskies down in Blackwattle bay. These thugs have taken a real liking to my crankas and their teeth are making mince meat of my 3lb FC. The list of lost and swallowed reads like a who's who of my favorite bream lures and my wallet has just about had enough.
So here's my dilemma: I'm a serious convert to running fluoro straight through, but i'm not a fan of losing $18 crankas! ![]() Short of moving back to running braid with 6 or 8 lb leader I was thinking of getting creative and tying on say 5cm of 6 or 8lb leader to my main line of 3lb FC - with the hope that this might negate the Flatty Factor...What do you guys think? is this idea genius or am I just dealing in fool's gold?

Guys down my way do it alot when the big duskys are leader shy.
Even when using braid and running about a 3kg leader, a short length of 6kg does the job. Another option which helps sometimes is to take the front set of hooks off your hard bodies.

Yes you could run a short heavier leader tied to your straight through FC using say a surgeons knot or similar or if you have a spare spool for your reel?... you could just load up a spool with say 5-8lb straight through for targeting the flat chaps... bit of a catch 22 situation though as a larger leader may dampen your lure action / reduce your strike rate... Maybe a good option for you would be to trial running say 5lb straight through instead of 3lb which will hedge your bets both ways as far as still maintaining some degree of lure action / finesse but also give you more of a chance to land most of the flat chaps that you are hooking! Just some suggestions! Cheers Steersy CRANKA

Steersy's 5lb idea is right on the money. I used to do it fishing racks and still use it for my bass fishing!
You still have the finesse of straight through fluro but you can put a little more hurt on them and take a little more punishment back. |

Catch 22 indeed, I'm a big fan of 3lb FC for targeting the Breambos - I've found my hookup rate has gone through the roof since changing over from running braid to light leaders... I guess I'm trying to find a way to get the best of both worlds!

If you think FC 3lb is going to cut it with Flathead, then you'll always be asking for trouble. You can have 3lb FC with a "tippet" section that will support holding such fish without being cut off.
It is like saying I'll use 10lb FC on mackerel rather than 60lb or soft wire. It is like taking a knife to a gun fight. Michael

could try taking the front trebles off as others have suggested and maybe even try using zx assist style hooks to hopefully keep the main line as far away from the fishes gob!
