Talking Stranded on a desert island...

Hey guys,

You've all probably had a conversation with someone about 'if you were stranded on a desert island, what 3 items would you want with you?'. Let's put a different spin on it (no pun intended) and find out what outfit (rod/reel) you would have with you plus 3 lures only. For arguments sake, there will be a nice little estuary on this island plus a sandy beach and tropical water.

I'm keen to hear your thoughts...

if your talking tropics then the three lures choice are easy, 1 gold bomber long A, 12 and 15 cm nilsmaster invincible in colour number 67 (black/gold tiger something or other). when I moved to the NT years ago, i was told (and read) that these were the most succesful lures. I ended up buying about 200 different lures/colours, and the only things that really produced where the aforementioned ones. As far as an oufit goes I'd hate to say it but going for durability, probably an ugly stick of somesort (not my prefered casting/fighting rod, but I'm stuck on this desert island, so its gotta last) and a good overhead (maybe tica caiman 200) loaded with heavyish braid, don't want to lose my dinner now do I.
As far as everything else is concerned, well the professor could knock up a still for fermented coconut spirit, ginger and maryanne would be fine company, I'd keep in good with the Thurston Howells (in case we ever get rescued) and probably use the skipper and gilligan as live bait.

Very funny guys : ) esp the fermented coconut.

Nice choice of gear Angry. An ugly stick should keep you out of trouble. What about an Abu 7000c? Bloody good workhorse.

A mate of mine used to rep the bomber range and man did he use to move the gold bombers. Top lure for nth Oz.

Any other takers? What about if you were restricted to estuary fishing only?

For mine, probably something like a 2000 Sustain with 6lb braid plus a G Loomis dropshot rod. I'll have to have a think about the lures though. My gear looks like a virtual tackle shop, too many choices!

Well, seeing as it's a desert island i'll asume its somewhere tropical...you guys can go play with the bream, i'd take a flyrod (i'm thinking 9 weight) and wade the flats and catch bones, permit and goldens haha, tell me that isn't a better idea.....

Yeah hehe, its funny, i have this perception of bones, permit and tarpon and i guess goldens as being a fly only thing, but i have definite ambitions involving chucking poppers at GT's, like the thought of a 35kg GT on a flyrod just makes me wince
At this stage it looks like i will be chucking flies at bones on a certain indian ocean island around jan/feb 2005, ohhhh yeaaahhh.....

It's nice to see some excitement about a few different species that don't get a look in normally (afterall, it is the Breammaster website).

Dave, I'd be tempted to take some SP's too. They've been very effective. But with the desert island thing, what happens when you go through the pack?

Duncan, before I die, I will make sure that I get the chance to hunt some real speedsters in the shallows on fly (I've yet to master a fly rod). A few golden trevally and eventually a permit for starters. I dunno about hooking a big GT on fly. Can you get enough backing? Re: bonefish on fly. The 'A River Somewhere' series with Rob Sitch and Tom Gliesner has a great episode where they fly over to Florida and then take a boat to Venezuala? to catch Bonefish on fly. Man do they run. These guys openly admit to not having a clue in regards to heavy saltwater fly applications, but they look like they have a ball.

Keep up the replies guys. I'm keen to hear your thoughts.

I wish my 3" berkeley drop shot minnows were like a Tim Tam pack. They're not lasting long at the moment!
