Hi all

need some advice from you all.

i am using frog 4lb on 3lb sunline fc leader but the leader seems to be constantly slipping off. lost a few lures..

are the poundage too small for fg? is there something i must be aware of when i tie the FG knot?

please advice...

Needs to be really really tight when you pack down the FG and its not easy. At that diameter I'd be wondering if its worth the effort - tie an Albright or Slim Beauty.

I have always struggled tying the FG knot in the light lines. I am not sure if I couldn't get enough tension in each wrap of the braid around the leader but now I only use the FG knot when tying heavy leaders (30lbs) for tuna, queenies etc.

Hopefully someone can help us both out with this one.

How many turns are you doing?I do a minimum of 21 and keep the braid pretty straight as you pull up the turns... finish with 3 half hitches.
cheers nereus

Hey mate. I use 4lb frog and sometimes 2lb FC if I have to. I have always just used the Albright. Works for me.

I haven't tied it in any line or leader that light. It's fiddly but I use a tool I got from plat, but like with most knots, just spend some time practicing and experimenting at home until you get a good result, the fg can be quite easy to tighten the overhand knots in the wrong place (overlapping ones further back) but take your time and you should get the hang of it

albright special is great! but doesnt work well with stiffer lines, eg. fused fireline.... But to be honest, you cant go wrong with the double uni, as far as being quick and easy to tie on the water, in the wind, rain, etc. you cant beat it

Melt the end of your leader tag with a lighter and snug the fg right up to that. Be careful whenusing the lighter as Iit will weaken the braid or leader if the flame brushes the knot. Super glue can also help just a drop no more. Make sure all weaves are tight too before you half hitch.
Try a slim beauty knot or albright as well. Pracitce alot will definately help too. Study other knots that may come in handy too. Can't hurt to have a few up your sleeve. Cheers Gav.

There's a really easy way to tie an fg/sebile knot that will never slip, even on 2lb fluro, but I don't know if I can explain it without pictures. I'll try and draw it on paint and put it up later tonight.

have always used an albright for all my leader connections coz it's easy to tie but have noticed that 10lb castaway to 5 lb / 3 lb leader that my snag ups have usually resulted in me losing all my leader ......... i.e. break at leader knot

on other lines that i have used such as toray (10lb), sunline (8), frog (4?) and oh my gosh fireline exceed (4) and stren (3lb) they almost always break at the jig head (uni knot) ...

this is just something i have noticed (and may not be relevant to you, otoshi, but perhaps some knots may be better for some braids .. and that not just one knot, albright, will work well with all leader knots .. i need to experiment a little with the castaway .. sick of having to re-tie whole lengths of leader !

Honestly 3lb leader and 4lb Frog isn't what I'd be using but that is just me. Especially if you are fairly new to using braid. I use fluoro straight through if I want to use under 4lb Fluoro. It's a lot stronger and a lot less hassle if you want to use a really light line.

I tend to use 8lb braid and 6lb leader 90% of the time as well. Unless you are chasing really spooky fish, I don't think 3lb leader is necessary anyway. Might save you a few lures from snags and roastings.

I have some 8lb Frog and it's thin. I'd imagine the 4lb would be super thin. You are gonna need to use a lot of turns to get it to hold I reckon, with any knot.

Look at the thread I just posted, that knot will help get tighter wraps on light line fg's.

thanks all for your wise advice. will look into stella fella's FG knot and if i fail... than maybe add super glue? (will keep way from the fire) if all that fails, then will try to learn the Slim Beauty.. and if that fails... which means i am hopeless with knots... which i think i am now... then will take up to go back up to the 6lb main with 6lb leader which i do not have a problem with.

again, thank you all.. you guys are all very kind to share your suggestion and ideas. Cheers
