Backing -> mainline

Hi all...

I feel I will get the normal reponse that all these threads get.

After many a bust off and such my main line is getting a little short, fire line, which is ok because there is more than enough line left. Problem is I joined my backing to my mainline with a double uni, which has mean when I got for the big casts my mainline gets hampered by the knot. What are people using as a backing to mainline? Bimini? Take into account I have spent many an hour practicing trying such knots and have no success I need an easy to do lowprofile knot.

...Cheers

Shane

Shane,
the improved albright is probably the streamlined knot. The relatively thick mono is only doubled over so it doesn't have the extra bulk of other knots where it is wrapped around itself.

Also I presume you are using half (or less) a spool of fireline over your backing. I now use a whole 125 yard spool and never have any issues with the knot, where when I used half a spool it was really annoying.

I started with 125 yards... I'm just very crap at casting and such Been putting the pennys aside to purchase a new spool of fireline and mono

Well I guess it is back to practising the Imp Albright.

That's a fair amount of fireline to go through. You might consider going to 6lb fireline. Long range casting distance will be affected but the thicker stiffer line should be easier to control and tangle less.

If your not actually getting to the stage where all the fireline is being cast (ie the backing is going up the guides) and the fireline is just catching on the knot resulting in a short cast. Try putting a small piece of sticky tape over the knot (not around the knot just over it on the spool); this will stop the fireline catching and allow a smoother cast but will not prevent the backing feeding off if you hook a decent fish.

Worked for me.

Thats an awesome idea craig...
Something worth looking into for anyone who might do a bit of spinning for tailor, bonito, etc. I can almost get to my backing with a big cast on one of my reels when using a twisty of about 15g.

That's exactly when I struck the problem Dave, flicking a 10 or 15g Halco Twisty out for tailor and the cast would pull up short due to the fireline catching on the knot joining it to the backing.

The sticky tape solution was easier & cheaper than respooling the reel.

Catch up with you soon for more fishing lessons (you teaching me).
