Beach Plastics Flicking Rod

Hi BM's,

I was flicking plastics at the beach the other day with my usual plastics setup and its obviously too short at 7 ft, even with almost dead flat surf. Is there a rod out there in the 8-9 ft range that works like a bream stick but longer? Like 2-6lb 9ft bream stick, but no so whippy like a bait fishing outfit? Still looking to target bream, flatties, dart etc.

Cheers
J.

Take a look at a Daiwa Lateo Pirates LP96ML.
Although I don't own 1, I've heard they are pretty good for this sort of thing.

I went through all of this a while ago.. and to be honest the answer is no. its kind of like asking for a 40hp outboard in a 15hp size.

the best one I ended up sticking with was the Abu Garcia multi purpose 9 foot. but even still working plastics is crap. so I just continue to use my 7" Gary Howard for anything under 3/8 ounce. and the 9" for 3/4 ounce.

ive used pretty much everything people will recommend and none have been good for getting a great plastics action. its always going to be the problem of a 9' rod; becoming even worse when a bit of surf action picks up and running a tight straight line through the swell.

best I can recommend is going for a flats rod at 7'6. this way you will be able to find a plastics specific rod and get a good fast action which is what you need... you just cannot get this from a 9 foot rod.

also if your throwing weight under 1/4 you wont be able to sail it out further than you can a 7 or 7'6 rod anyway. the oomph you get out of the 7'6 far out ways the extra length in the 9ft rod in that weight class.

i'll save you a lot of time and money like I did and say get a 7'6 fast action 2-5kg. run atleast 12lb braid. not uncommon to get a few flatties in the gutters over 70cm, pulling them up to ankle hight water sometimes sucks.
