Hey dude.
I've recently upgraded to my first DSLR, a nikon D3100 which is an awesome camera. Having used P&S's I can say that there really is no comparison if you use a DSLR camera properly (there's heaps of people who basically use a DSLR as a P&S by just using easy mode mode) but yeah, work them out and you'l get a great pic!

If you were thinking of buying a decent P&S new, I'd say get a second hand DSLR, I paid for $300 for my D3100, just had to look around for one at that price. so there are some bargains out there.

If you decide to go for a second hand DSLR, make sure you ask for a shutter count before you buy, then jump on the manufacturers website and check the shutter life of that particular camera... you wouldn't want to buy a 100,000 shutter life camera that's taken 95,000 shots.

Anyway, there's my 2 cents

Cheers
Chris

If you're looking for one that will take the knocks and water then check out the Olympus TG series. I have the TG-1 and have been very impressed with it so far. Image quality is very good.

Might chime in here
most DSLRs are quite heavy, so depending on what you need you might want to take the weight into consideration.
point and shoots and the new NEX, and mirrorless type cameras are pretty much a compact DSLR much easier to use and some also take the same lenses as a DSLR does.
dont buy a DSLR if our going to use it in auto modes as its more like watching a new movie on a black and white TV

cheers

The fuji xp50 is a great camera for the money. Tough, waterproof, dirtproof and the image quality is very good. You can get them for pretty cheap if you shop around
