SAS Braid Ultimate Leader
I have just picked up some new S.A.S Braid Ultimate Leader in 4lb and first impressions is wow!
The packaging is very good. Its comes inside a cool little tin in 50m spools and looks very neat. I'm looking forward to giving this leader a go! I am just wondering has any one else used this leader yet and what are your thoughts?

Maybe I don't get it but could someone please explain me what is it mean exactly: 4 lbs leader with breaking strain of 6.9lbs?
Seriously, is it just another gimmick to make it look really good? Why doesn't the manufacturer label it as a 0.207 mm leader with breaking strain of 6.9lbs? Where does the 4 lbs come to an equation from? Just say it's a 6.9lbs leader, full stop! ![]() If you look at the label it says: Tested Breaking Strain 4 lbs (6.9lbs)- What is it exactly???? I am getting tired of those meaningless labels on both braid and leader that are trying to present the product to look better that it is. Rant over

I don't think that many of the other manufacturers go to the effort of putting a breaking strain on the label. Which other brands put the breaking strain on the packet that they have tested before packaging.
If you have a line class say 4lb then you can look at the diameter and see which brand is thinner. It's probably easier to give them a general line class it simplifies things alot. It also coincides with the Rod ratings. It would be hard to give a fishing rod a line class if you didn't have this more general approach to rating it. A 4lb line must have a breaking strain of greater than 4lb, obviously they are trying to market the product as being thin enough to be in the 4lb class but break at a higher rating.(Generally Speaking) It's a good selling point and they like everyone else should be able to market there products accordingly. Finally SAS are an Australian based company doing some amazing things in the fishing industry I have decided to support them via stocking there products. This post is more for the younger members who are not as familiar with this stuff. Last edited by fishincomau; 21-06-2013 at 06:01 PM. |

It's also half the Price of V-Hard. Nicky Day, have you used both SAS leader and VHard and compared the 2 coming up with the conclusion that VHard is better? Last edited by fishincomau; 21-06-2013 at 07:20 PM. |

A good quality fluro is around .165 mm diameter for 4 lb,,this is .207 mm which is around standard for 6 pound.
Therefore this 6 pound, i reckon it will go well for you . |

Despite the leader being sold as 4lb and showing the actual breaking point, I think it is handy when it comes to setting your drag. NO other brand actually tells you what they break at, maybe they should, that way each brand can be significantly looked at by potential buyers on thickness compared to breaking point.
I use this leader when you using trebled lures as this leader has some monofilament introduced into the fluorocarbon during making it. This gives the leader an ability to stretch a small amount but yet retain abrasion resistance. I do use other leader like V hard and berkley vanish in breaking strains that SAS do not make yet. I cannot see a huge difference in any particular leader. I have noted that I tend to lose less fish on trebled lures with the SAS. Cheers Gav

looks like a great product, well done.
i tend to use 3lb leaders that are 0.148mm so this leader is a bit thick for what i do, but look foward to seeing some thinner leader in the future.

Hi everyone
Let me give you a run down about our SAS ultimate leader. Firstly it is NOT as thin as a pure fluorocarbon, the reason being we have added in additional resins to allow 4-6% stretch and also drop the hardness of the outside coating fractionally. Most fluorocarbons have a hardness of between 92-96 ours has been dropped back to 88-92 this DOES NOT affect abrasion resistance to a noticeable point. It allows the leader to hold knots better and most importantly helps stop pulling hooks during a fight. We actually put 4 cams underwater while we were developing it to see what went on between the brands I used to use and ours the results were interesting. During the actual bite the hook up rate was 11% more with ours over the other brand we were comparing it to, this was put down after analyzing the footage to the way the fish actually hit the lure. There is a strong initial opposite direction pull as the fish grabs the lure and tries to run the opposite way. This is where the extra stretch in SAS leader came into play allowing the hooks to set but not rip like the other brand. (There must be some horrible lipped fish out there) We made this to compliment the way our braid works which has caused some people problems with knots in the 6lb being so thin, this leader will allow the braid to bite just that little more and hold the leader without problem. Nothing beats good knots when joining braid/leader and on our testing website we have tested and worked on 000's of knots and even have a forum on the subject. So if you would like to see what your knot tests at or modified knots that work better then check it out at www.paulusjustfishing.com Cheers Dan |
