On the Plat website it says' you can use by Salt Game" so I am assuming they are slatwater safe. I hope so, as I've just bought a 2004! I'll let you know if it deteriorates - not sure if its made of magnesium?

You made me nervous, I emailed Daiwa Australia to see if they know anything. I can't find anything about the composition of the body other than "zaion" is supposed to be one of the life changing materials used. I am not sure whether that is just the spool or the complete reel. Will let you know if I find out more..

Got a reply from Daiwa marketing. Quote "Freshwater only, we have them coming in a few months to Australia that we got made to be saltwater friendly. If you buy from overseas please understand that there is no warranty or parts available in Australia."
So there you are, conflicting information from PLAT and Daiwa.
I don't know if that is the truth or just a company protecting their market. Bugger it, I've bought the damn thing now, time will tell if they are saltwater safe..

Highly doubt they've made a saltwater version for Australia!! If it's Zaion then I can see why you'd have an issue in saltwater.

It's Zaion so it should be fine. It most likely (with out looking) doesn't have CRBB. Easy to change over or just look after it and it should be fine.

Yes, it made me suspicious when he said no parts or service available if you purchase from overseas. Like you, I can't see Daiwa requesting special saltwater safe models for the piddly Australian market. Hardly cost effective. I am guessing it will be like most reels in that you have to take good care of them in regards to maintenance. Years ago, we seemed to survive with reels before "saltwater safe" became yet another marketing tool.

Don't worry they will have internal parts. They will be the same as a new Caldia internally I'm guessing.

Should be a good reel and pretty cheap to.
