Reel for a 305 Seajigger
As the title says, I'm considering buying a 305 Seajigger for chucking 40 and 50 gram metals off the beaches and headlands for salmon and tailor.
Just wondering what sort of reels guys are running on these? I was thinking a 4000 Stradic or something like that. If you know a more suitable rod, let me know as well. Thanks

I've got a Seajigger 315 which is the lightest one and run a 5000 Sustain fj on it. Casts very good.

As for a more suitable rod I picked up a Daiwa Morethan Branzino 95ML a few weeks ago. The rod is labelled a wading game custom and is 9'5 long and a very slim blank and rated at 6-16lb with a lure weight of 5-28g. Its got Fuji Titanium SIC 's .Its the nicest rod Ive ever used and I've had a ball using it. Its a Japanese import. I put a 2500 Stella on it. One spool has 8 lb and another 15lb YGK WX4 superfine braid. It flicks little metal slugs out of sight and I also use it for throwing squidgy flick baits as well.
Caught some solid salmon ,bonito, rat kings and frigates and the rod handles it with ease. I'm even going to use it for blackfish off the rocks or flicking unweighted prawns and bread at bream and pigs. Its an expensive rod but you can work it one handed all day long as its that light. The Seajigger and Nitro Sniper tend to sit in the rack now. |

Took a look at the Shimano Revolution Coastal 9 foot model this morning and wasn't a huge fan. Still a nice rod but I prefer the Seajigger.

I had a 305 with a 5000 Stradic FI. It was nice to use but i think the reel wasn't heavy enough for the rod. After an hour or so of casting slugs my wrists would really feel it.
I was casting 40 grams slugs with it mainly. It could cast heavier but i heard stories of people using heavier slugs and snapping the tip. The daiwa site says this rod can cast 35 - 100 grams. For me, i wasn't comfortable trying anything over 50. |

I have a Stradic FI 4000 on my Daiwa Jig Caster 9'7". Have yet to try it but it feels the goods. Good luck with your choice. Regards, HBt.

I've got one of the light Seajiggers and it wears a Stradic Ci4 4000. It's a good combo to use. The lightweight reel seems to make the outfit less tiring to use for long periods.

If you have somewhere local that stocks the shimano revo coastal rods, penn prevail surf series or samaki zing surf series load one up and see how it feels.. All around the same price you'll pay for a seajigger.
If you want to spend a bit more check on the saltist demon blood 962h or the tournament master surf rods, I use the tournament master 1203LM rod matched with a sustain fg 6000 for all my bigger metal/stick baiting work of the rocks in Sydney and it's a pleasure to use. |

Sorry Guys. I was going off the specs from the catalog that big joint in Coffs Harbour put out and they have them back to front.
Its the 315 Im looking at, the 1 rated to cast 18-55g. Would these cast 40-50g metals OK? I've heard stories they snap pretty easy if overloaded.

I've got a 315. 40g is about it. Starts to get a bit scary beyond that. I reckon 25-30g feels ideal. I use a stradic 4000.

Maybe the heavier model might be better. Nitro Sniper is also a nice stick.

So I'm thinking the the 305 would be pretty similar to this and I'm really looking for something a bit lighter. The problem with the Daiwa and Nitro rods is the nearest stockist is 2 hours drive away and I would really like to see 1 in the flesh before I buy. The 9 foot Shimano Revolution Coastal is looking better all the time. Thanks for all your advice guys.
