UV coloured lures?

Just wondering what the benefits of using UV coloured lures over standard colours? Can anyone say they have seen an increase in catch rates or is this just another colour to catch the angler?

Some fish species are supposed to be able to see UV. Also UV is the light that penetrates deeper into water, which humans cannot see UV, thats why we get burnt from it on overcast days as we are not aware of it. The UV penetrates the deepest therefore lights up the lure coating for fish to see. Also some fish naturally reflect UV so predators can see them in their environment.

I haven't used my UV lures much so i cant really talk about increases. Mine are also only shallow divers, but try to use them early morning, low light, sunset etc.

Interesting! Thanks for shedding some light (yes thats a pun) on the reasoning behind the UV lures VXCALAIS, would still be good to know if anyone has had increased catch rates.

Hi All

Bait Breath have released at Osaka new plastics which are UV. Apparently they go amazingly well. We are developing a range of Australian exclusive colours in the SL Remix 2" and they will include some UV colours. More to come from Osaka.

Maria Fakebaits come in some great UV colours.

jackalls in brown suji are uv, as are some of the other colours. perhaps an extra reason why its such a proven catcher

There was an interesting article on this topic in one of the fishing mags late last year.
It's surprising which lures do display brighter than other under a UV light. You would probably be surprised by what's already in your trays and packets that "light up" when you shine a UV light over them.
After reading that article I went and bought a cheap UV torch and waved it over all of my tackle trays and plastics and some really stood out.
I don't know whether there is science behind whether they work better, or whether it's coincidence, but I must say that most of my preferred lures exhibit a slight or better reaction to a UV torch.

I'm a big fan of uv coloured lures! Definately something I consider, even in shallow water. This is why chartreuse works so well, as with pink, white and orange bellies. I was at AFTA watching Hiroshi Takahashi doing a presentation and he was saying that with the high UV levels we get here in Australia it becomes very effective using UV reacting colours, this got me thinking and it definately seems to work on bright sunny days. I am a believer! I think I filmed his presentation I might have to try and find it...
