New setup - What rod?
Hey guys, been tossing up getting a new combo lately, something around the 6kg mark or heavier. I want to use it for flinging lighter lures from like 7 grams to 25grams. Will be used for chasing jacks to tuna, Spangled emperor to dhufish and maybe some light jigging for demersals. I was having a look at the Gloomis GL2 ESP spin 8-15lb, 6'8". It has a nice light tip but the guides seem really weird on how they have placed them out. It also might just possibly be to light for what i want it to do. I wouldnt use it for jigging though.
The other rod is a Shimano Terez 15-30lb 7'2" spin rod. This is ideal for jigging and stopping the bigger class of fish. but i am not sure how it would go casting lures like 1/4 jigheads. Any body who has tried any of these rods, your feedback is very much appreciated!! Also if anyone has any other suggestions that would be great!! Would prefer the rod to be around 6'8"-7' and an ideal weight would be around 15-20lb. splitt grip preferred as well. Thanks guys!! |

By the sounds of it you want three outfits, one a seven foot 30lb spinning outfit another maybe 6'6 20lb outfit and the other a 20-30lb jigging outfit. Trying to make one outfit cover all those bases is pretty much impossible considering the fishing styles.
For spanglies you want to be able to spin anywhere around 30-40lb line. This would also be ok for using plastics out deep. But metals its a pain in the behind with a long tippy spinning rod. I rate my nitro viper for spanglies with a stella 5000SW. The best spanglie reel period. Drag to stop fish and strong enough to take a bit of tropical abuse. Jigging demersals PE2 or PE3, 6'3 max. Tairyo nano make a nice PE2 jig rod in this size. I use an Xzoga PE2 which pulled a big sambo in last weekend. On the cheaper side, the shimano revolution vertical series arent bad at all. Again 4000 to 5000 size reel- I use a stradic 4000 on mine and occasionally the stella 5000 but that will soon be going on a dedicated PE3 setup. Jigging rods arent casting rods, they just arent built for it and perform as such. But vertical lifting, yes. For chasing jacks, tuna, tailor salmon etc you would want something that runs 20lb braid on a 4000 size reel. Basically a lighter version of the spanglie rod. Jacks are bloody good at smoking you real easy if you cant get ontop of them quickly and tuna you would want a couple of hundred metres of line capacity. |

I have three terez rods the TZS72ML,TZS72MH, and the TZS69XH even with the ML it would be to stiff to work plastics properly and jigging would be a pain in the arse with any of the terez series they're to long..

Yeah i reckon the Nitro viper sounds wicked, Good for everything apart from jigging but thats alright. What is the prime weight to chuck on it?? i would put it with a 4000 Stradic Ci4 or FJ

I have used two ounce jigheads for dhuies. But casting wise we generally run rapala max raps or similar lures and they cast fine. 4000 reels dont last long chasing spanglies. We used to get a trip or two before they needed work. The 5000 stella has had 3 trips now, plus countless trips jigging and still smooth as butter.

all good info guys, keep it coming, loving it!! samurai 302, possibly heavier or something like that would be awesome. I really want a good flats rod, medium weight. For chasing spangos, smaller cods, jacks, tuna, trevs and the usual northern species. going to carnarvon on jan 4th hence why i want something a bit more beefy. So far the Nitro Viper sounds the best!!! for the purposes listed above anyway. Will mainly be used LB throwing plastics, popper, stickbaits, and shallow runners
