Daiwa Capricorn 1500/a or Stradic
Hi there,
Anyone know if there is any major difference between the Capricorn 1500 & the 1500a beside the anti-rust bearings? If you were going to purchase one would you spend an extra $35 for the 1500a? What are peoples opinions between the Stradic and the Capricorn? How do the spool diameters compare? Found this interesting after the discussion about greater casting distances..... I have one Stradic 2000 (2 yrs old) and it is a very nice reel but can get a good price on a Capricorn 1500 at the mo....... This has probably been thrashed out b4 but would help me greatly to do it over again...... Thanks in advance Finney

Hi Finney,
I have used the first two series of stradic 2000's. The first one got flogged to death but had crappy bearings and gears were grindy, although at the time they were way ahead of any Daiwa in their price range imo. Caught stacks of fish on it. The second series was an improvement but I found that it wasn't laying the line as good as the previous so i got rid of it and bought a Capricorn 1500, which I am wrapped in. It has caught heaps of bream and also use it with 4lb fireline and caught some good tailor and salmon on it in Botany Bay,as well as some stud flathead on SP's. Excellent line lay and great drags. The slower gear ratio I find great for waorking SP's but I'm working double time on the pelagics, but you want it as a bream reel. The only thing was that Shimano brought out the new stradic and sustain range just after I bought the Capricorn, and it has some improvements and they certainly looked the goods. You will find the shimano's have superlative drags straight out of the box. To cut a long story short, I have bought myself a sustain 2500 and stradic 1000 to see how it compares. If the stradic is not to my liking, I'll buy the new capricorn or upgrade to the sustain. But am extremely happy with the Capricorn. The Shimano will also have more resale value if you like to upgrade every couple of years or so. Go for the latest model in the Capricorn with the improved bearings, it's well worth it as $35.00 is only a couple of lures anyway. Hope this helps. Budda |

Thanks Lizard,
So the Capricorn it is, now just need to figure out if the anti-rust ball bearings are worth the extra $35? I have a Stradic 2000 that I have owned for over 2 yrs. It doesn't have the anti-rust bearings like the new models in Daiwa and Shimano. I have extensively used this reel since new and the only thing I do is wash it down after every fishing trip. So if I go away for a week it gets washed at the end of the week. It has so far given me faultless operation and looks like new. Budda suggests that the anti-rust bearings are worth the extra $35 as it is only a few lures. I tend to agree but I am being greedy and buying 2 whilst the 1500's are cheap..... Any other input still appreciated Thanks again Finney |
