Our local estuaries disappointing...

Hi guys and girls,
I'm currently doing my duke of ed through school, and part of the duke is volunteering.

Today I helped clean up my local estuary Woy Woy bay or more specifically around pelicans island. Its fun getting out of school to help out in the community but its disapointing to see how much crap we pull out of the mangroves! in a space of 200-300m a group and I pulled out 3 tonnes of rubbish (beer bottles, cans, bottles, plastic, oyster racks!! bottles, and god knows what else). and thats just 20m in from the wtaer and a distance of 200m across. proud that I'm helping but just sad to see that this is what is in our local waters.

Just last week we went to patonga and literally 10m squared (small bedroom) we pulled just over 1500 bottles or in other words one of those garbage tips that restruants use to dump rubbish...it was filled to the top. it was insane you didn't even need to take one step without taking about 50 bottles with you.

Take a look next time your out on the water, you'd be amazed at how much you'll find. and I hope that people become more aware of what there throwing away because what it effects everything, even the mangroves.
Nick

Good on ya bud.
It's downright disgusting the state some waterways are in.
You really know you're in the woods when you can walk the banks and not find a beer bottle.

I am doing Duke of Ed too, good to hear of another BM member doing the same, it's great fun, good stuff cleaning up your local water way, what we do is maintain the schools wetland ecosytem. But we also clean up litter too as part of the community service part.

Good Stuff!

Good work on the Duke of Ed, I personally got about half way through my gold before work commitments took precedence.

Yea it is Sh!t the amount of rubbish that gets discarded, but no matter how much work you do people will still litter, we need more education regarding the affects of what they do. But hey its the human condition i guess.

Also once you finish your D of Ed, dont forget to include it in your resume's etc will definitely get you some bonus points, good luck with it
