Topwater leader
Gday all, new to site but been reading posts for a while now. Interested to know what leader people are using for topwater fishing with lighter lures e.g nw pencils. Been perserving with 4 to 6 pound fluro but in certain situations the pull down from the fluro is annoying . Keen to hear how everyone sets up

All of our P{ro Team use Mono as it floats and does not affect the swimming action of the lure. Fluorocarbon sinks and tends to try and drag the nose under.

I've been using Yamatoyo Pro Line Fighter in 6lb.
I thought I'd give this stuff a go as it is specifically designed as a mono leader. To be honest I don't notice a lot of difference to the Platypus Platinum (leftover backing) I used to use, only it is a fair bit thinner.

I've used both mono and flouro. Prefer the mono but rarely make the effort to change leader unless I'm going for Bass and setup the night before.
For the guys that use Mono do you use normal mono line or specifically made mono leader? Much difference in floatation/performance? |

I get away with fluro when theres no tidal flow, but once theres flow I tend to get dragged under, I like the hardness of the fluro as the lures tend to come back more often, irks me losing a fish and lure at the same time

can rub vaseline or scent on the fluoro to make it float but i prefer to carry 2 rods - 6 lb mono for top water and fluoro for everything else .. saves me changing over leaders coz i'm a lazy b@stad

IMO you can't beat flourocarbon as a normal leader for everything other than surface lures. FC Rock is pretty popular and hard to beat.

Personally, I think the big secret for surface lure leaders is just to keep them very short. Long leaders will tend to pull your lure under the water, especially if they're flourocarbon ones. Using mono helps, but it will still sink unless you dress it with a floatant. The leader on my surface outfit is 6lb FC rock, cut to just 5 feet and it works well with even the smallest walk the dog lures.
