Soft plastic rod with K guides

Hi guys,

Appreciate your advice on some good 'light tackle' gear based roughly on the following..
I'm a kayak fisho mainly, looking for an allrounder rod with k guides to assist reduce wind knots. Want to cast soft plastics in the 1/8-3/8 jig head range for hard pulling fish. I expect it will get a workout from salmon, bonito and kings aswell as flathead and (lastly) bream around structure.

Length around 7ft & 2 piece also. Don't really care about saving a few grams weight, would like larger guides to allow heavier leader to pass unhindered.

Currently I have been using a Shimano Starlo Pro Vibe less end runner ever since a mishap on my last bonefish trip to New Cal. Need something a bit crisper.
All my other rods are heavier for snapper, jigging, popping etc..

Seen the Tournament Specialist Bream TNSB 702MLXFSOH but dont (yet) have that kind of $'s... Looking around for others in the medium light range.

Thanks for listening..

Cheers Dave

Hi Dave73,

You could look at the new Strikepro Nanoedge 7LS2P.
This is 7' 2pce 2-4kg Nano Technology with 'K' frame guides.
Also comes with hard tube and an 'Expidite Lifetime Warranty'.

I use the 1pce model for Snapper down south, it has plenty of stopping power.

Awesome thanks! Both look very nice and have made the shortlist.
Dont know maybe the gen 4 dropshots are worth a look as a cheap option?

Cheers Dave

I fished with a few different drop shot rods. They are my favorite of all the cheaper rods I've used, but I found that while they had pretty good tip sensitivity, they lacked some power in the butt of the rod for bigger fish.

Have a look at Tairyo rods such as nano speed and mega speed. Will only set you back $145-$200 depending on model. Or i just got a custom rod built with those specs your after from Jiggy Jig Customer Rods for $300 and it had sic K series guides, camo grips and fuji honey soft reel seat. A very well made rod. Check him out on facebook.

Thanks heaps guys, bit of research to do now.
If 2 piece options are so few & or excy, I’d consider going to a 1 piece rod to open up the field.

Would choose perfectly useful over convenience after all.

Cheers Dave

The Megabass SLX-78L from the new generation of Shoreluck XX rods might be worth a look, although at 7'8" it's considerably longer than what you are looking for.

For a price that's much less than the original Shoreluck range, I find that it gives up nothing in terms of sensitivity (I personally think that I'm getting a superior sense of feel compared to both my old Shoreluck SLM-74UL and my Kirisame F1-66ZKS), with greater versatility.

While I was a little skeptical of the shortish handle at first, I've actually found it to be a good length -- you can still do 2-handed casts, but the butt won't get tangled up in your clothes or gear when you're in a yak.

Hey Dave,

The new Team Daiwa X TDX rods are awesome, i have a couple for breaming and can't fault them. Strong blank, very crisp, light etc

Be careful though, as with many of the new daiwa rods, they utilise micro guides. Ok for light leaders, but may be a struggle to get larger leader knots through them. Not sure on the medium model though, i'd make sure i checked one out in the flesh first.

Thankyou so much! that's really important for me to know. I will try and find out as I was going to order sight unseen and get it delivered. Micro guides are not my thing.
From their website "TDX are our first rods to introduce the new Fuji KR concept guides. The KR guide use the “Rapid Choke’ theory, by choking the line faster and getting it closer it to the blank earlier, it dramatically increases the rod performance."

Cheers Dave
