Popping Rod

Hi guys/gals, after reading the surface whiting thread and never having tried/caught a whiting or bream this way, I'm really keen to give it a shot this summer.

I'll be land based fishing the flats mainly so I'm looking for some advice on rod recommendations.

What's the preference out there in terms of rod length, 7' or 7'6, shorter, longer being land based ??

What would be the best bang for buck rod out there upto about $400 ish and preferably something I can check out and buy from a local tackle shop ??

Some opinions would be great !!

Thanks.

Thanks breaming125. I'll have a look.

Probably what I was more interested in, which i didnt mention in my original post, is what rod action do people think is more suited to popping ?? Would you go for a fast, medium or slow action rod ??

fast tapers are generally better. Slow/medium taper tend to dull the action of the lure.

its not just about the taper, its about the stiffness of the tip. You need that stiffness to impart lots of small jerks on the rod while retrieving the popper.

So anything that people recommend as a soft plastics rod is probably going to have those properties

If the tip is too stiff then it can tend to rip your lure out of the water and make it difficult to work it properly, especially with small stickbaits. You need to find a good middle ground that loads up quickly. Look at a Loomis DSR820 GLX.

I've found my Loomis 842-2 IMX is ideal as I don't rip the lure out of the whiting's mouth, but can still get a small R2S popper going quite well.

Cheers guys, that gives me some idea of what to look for in a rod. Much appreciated.

If anyone has more ideas in the meantime, feel free to chuck them up.
