Straight Through Crystal

With topwater fishing now becoming more of an option, I am looking for a setup to use that wont effect the action of surface lures eg sinking flouro. Now my question is has anyone tried running Fireline Crystal in the 1-2lb area without a leader? As braid floats I was thinking that Crystal could be suitable though I am not sure if I would just be better running straight through mono or a short flouro/mono leader. What are you thoughts?

It could work, I've used fireline orange straight through for blades and has worked. But topwater you might pull some hooks on fish if your not careful.

I run Sealine 4lb-8lb for my surface needs, IMO I reckon it is a better option that just running straight through crystal.

I run straight fluro and have never had it pull a surface lure under. Even on 6lb straight through using a tiemco topwater pencil. It's not necessary. Just use leader.

I agree. Was using Fireline Crystal 3lb with 6lb mono leader about a metre long on the weekend. Whiting were smashing the surface.

Guys,

I'm looking a trialling a few different gauges of mono for topwater work.

Quick question is there a difference between mono line and mono leader? Are there brands that make mono leader in light gauges?

What gauges would you fellas recommend for small topwaters such as PX45/55 and Sammy 65's etc?

Any input would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Joel

For my PX45/55's & Sammy's I use just Daiwa Sealine, 4lb-8lb depends on what I'm fishing for and what structure I'm fishing ect.
It has done me great so far and about to stock up on some for the summer

I've been using Yamatoyo Pro Line Fighter in 6lb.
At 0.165mm diameter its a bit thinner than most monos.
It's supposed to be pretty abrasion resistant too, but fishing the flats thats not a real issue for me.

Just buy some platypus super 100 in 8lb and it'll last you ages. No need to buy proper leader material really. Run it only a foot or two long for fast poppering or longer for spookier stuff with little stick baits.

Ok cheers Thanks for that. Will just stick to standard non leader material nylon by the sounds of it if there's no real benefit.

+1.
Fluro won't affect your topwaters. I would tie a leader on to have some shock absorbion to prevent pulled/bent hooks.

short length of mono for me on topwaters .. thicker 8 - 10lb so that it prevents hook fouling up on the casts and IMO floats better. works for me

fluoro works for others too as people have mentioned
