Hi mate
It all depends on where you'll be fishing I guess
Some folks are big on finesse fishing for barra with 1000 sized reels and light braid. Some chase them with much heavier gear
This weekend I'll be chasing bazzas with a Calais loaded with 30lb braid and a Stella 5000sw with the same braid. I haven't caught a decent fish for a while and with the warmer weather approaching, Alex Julius put me onto using the 5000 in case a big girl turns up.
Don't wanna risk it
In all honesty I can get away with a stella 3000fe, but hey what evs
I think barra fishing opens up a really wide array of possible outfits.
Some people turn their nose up at using 2500s, but in reality, they have great drag qualities and good spool capacity, so not much diff to a bc reel.
So many options out there, even on a budget

You could also get a big new shiny shimano tranx to troll the rivers durin the run off and load up with heavy string
I will be. No chances being taken for my first real opportunity to fish the run off. Chucking it on a broomstick

However no disrespect to numbing but 14lb fire line has a breaking strain around 35-40lb

Depends where you plan to be fishing I guess. In a big lake you can get away with lighter line as the fish dont have as much structure to snag you up in. But if your fishing close quarters, go heavier - you wont regret it!

Never chased them but I would say better TO MUCH than THAN NOT ENOUGH, this is on place where i would say less isn't more. But having said that I haven't caught one so go with the pros haha good luck

A mate told me to match the set up with the lures that you intend to use, rather than traditionally only with the size of fish.

For bream/bass size lures I have 6-10lb baitcast setup which is the lowest I'd go for Barra. For big lures I'd use my 10-20lb 3/8-1oz baitcast rod. Mostly, I reckon a 6-16lb 1/4-3/4oz setup is the most versatile and light weight enough to cast all day.

MONDURAN HAS A LOT OF TIMBER! So if your flicking in the snags you want heavy, I failed up there, but we spoke to a guy who showed us a 116 at the ramp he was running 30lb and wanted to up it to 50 for flicking the timber.... Although my mate got one (86 or 84cm) and it was in more open water, on 15lb finns and a 4000 Shimano Slade... 30lb will cover you easy, obviously if you hook a big fish in tight timber it could go either way... even 20 would probably be ok just leave you iffy in the tight stuff... Depending on what light you go if you went 15 or 20 you could go a 3000 if you went 20 or 30 a 4000 or 5000 so that you get quantity... If you go B/C then its not overly important... I mainly use spin as i use it for tuna down here and stuff... Also the added advantage to spin is that you can throw weightless plastics like boof frogs in the evening...where you might struggle on a B/C... So it really comes down to what fishing you doing...
