I have a Pentax Optio WG1 that does the job. It actually takes better under water photos that regular photos. Comes with a carabiner to hook it to your belt or whatever and is actually tough unlike the Olympus offering. Ive dropped mine on the rocks a few times and it harmlessly bounces into the water

Of course, if your used to the quality pictures the EOS 550D takes, any tough camera will look unspectacular.
Image quality wise, the Panasonic Lumix has the best qualities.

I have a Olympus and a Lumix and the Lumix quality above and below water shots are better. I find it easier to use also.

I got a lumix ft2, great piece of kit for underwater shots. tough as nails to boot too!

I wonder what the coin would be for an underwater housing for a SLR?

I had a Nikon D70 with an underwater housing... Camera when I bought it in '04 was just over $3000 and housing to suit was around $1500 (mid range model - top of the line you're looking at maybe $4k+). With a decent lens (105mm macro) the setup was around $6000 worth, not including external equipment like strobes.

A couple of years ago I took for a dive at Edithburgh jetty, looking for Sea Dragons. Found out the "fun" way that it a hairline crack where the baseplate joined the body of the housing and the whole thing flooded. Was only at about 3m at the time too, didn't take much pressure... good way to blow a fistful of cash, couldn't salvage anything

But in answer to your original question Jase I've had a play with the AW100 and it's a pretty sweet camera
