Question Stinger Hooks

Hi all,
I love fishing with plastics but sometimes I notice I am getting short strikes. This is happening more than I would like it to. Each time I get a hit I realise the tail is all chomped or the fish took it just behind the jig head. I am trying not to use a larger hook because I find that it affects the action. What are your views on stingers? Do I have to buy them or can I use stuff I already have? How do I rig one on a plastic?

Cheers

I run a short length of 10lb braid from the eye of the jighead to a smallish gamakatsu single lure hook. You can pin it lightly near the end of the plastic or just leave it trailing.

If you use the search tool on the site you'll find some good threads on stingers and how they are used.

Without having personal experience of the water you're fishing, its difficult to say - but if your lures are coming back like the photo's below - and the bights you're feeling are very timid.....

There's every chance its jerkwad toadies messing with you.

Dedicated fish eating bream have sharp pointed grabbing teeth a bit like a sharpened pencil. But Toadies have a Parrot like beak that cuts out semi circles from your lure.

Bream can still yank very hard on a plastic and not get hooked - The toadies tend to rapidly peck at the lure until theres nothing left, and the hits you get are like tiny pecks as opposed to big yanks

If you are getting the end bitten off chances r it's Tailor. Stingers do work but little tailor will sometimes eat around a stinger

I've made some stainless steel stinger wires for tailor especially when I find that lures are cut in half without much of a fight or tug...

Basically 4cm of thin 20lb stainless single strand with a tiny loop at both ends one slightly larger for the hook end so that the split ring can manage through and a small treble or single on the split ring (your choice).

Slip the ring over the jig point and barb and place a small rubber bead over the point and barb so that the stinger wire doesn't come off...

The stinger hook trails behind the main jig hook ready for any for any short strikes - certainly works with tailor and other species that seem to strike short at the tails!
