Lighter leader??

Hi guys i noticed the other day that some guys were using lighter leaders than there main line eg 6 lb braid with 4 lb leaders, why is that? Is it because they are closer diameters or?

Yes mate there are many Braided lines that are very thin so its easy to get away with 8-10lb braid and a light leader. I usually use 8lb Sunline Super PE which is very thin diameter.

also the lighter leader means that if they snag up and need to pop their line, it'll usually snap at the knot, that way you don't have to constantly re-ties your knots

I like using really light leaders in the day or in clear water but I usually upgrade from a 6lb to 20lb at night due to the bigger fish wanting to play. Although it all depends what you are targeting.

Does lighter leader = more twists in the water too?

as in coiling above the lure on the surface? if thats what you mean, i've used both 8lb yamatoyo rockfish and 6lb in the same leader material with 2gram vibes and the 8lb was by far the worst for coiling on the surface,i think it depends on lure weight though too,not sure about actual line twist though.

I find that I fish more confidently with lighter leader, believe it or not.

I use 3lb fluorocarbon and find it enough.

Cheers.

used to use 4lb leader but was getting bitten off by big bream way too many times when they inhale small plastics - moved to 8lb and haven't been bitten off yet. Am I getting less bites? hard to say.

You sure they were Bream?? Usually flattie and tailor will do that but i don't recall getting bitten of much at all by Big Bream on 3lb line let alone heavier, i have lost lures due to poor knots ad being rubbed off on pylons ect though. Wouldn't 8lb line impede the natural action of a small Placcie? I only go 8lb around really heavy structure but usually will fish as light as i can get away with.
