certate hyper custom
Hey guys, I'm buying a new setup for chasing kings in shallow water and I'm wondering if the certate hyper custom 4000 would be well suited to this. It'll be matched up with a saltiga casting rod (haven't settled on a model yet, but I'm leaning toward a 76 game) and some of the fish in the area exceed the 15kg mark. I don't have much experience with diawa reels above 3000 size, so I was wondering how good the drag is, how much punishment the reel can handle, or if I would be better off going up to a 4500 saltiga maverick? Any info would be much appreciated

4000 running a decent, thin 50lb braid will be sweet for that. i have one and it handles black jew that most people bend over on a tld 15-25.
Great reels. I did redo my drag with greased carbon tex though.

Honestly mate I reckon even a 3000 would be sweet I've knocked 20kg spanyids over with a sol 3000

That's the plan mate. Probably going to go with saltiga hyper, or tournament hyper accudepth PE. How much drag do you get out of the C-tex?

We've had pretty ordinary results from the accudepth mate, my mates 30lb was blowing at around 16lb and my 50lb I had on my Avet was pretty bloody average too. Don't let the super thinness of the line fool you, much better line on the market for the price you pay, it's not a BAD line don't get my wrong... I wouldn't be trusting it with shallow water kings tho. Not to sure if you've used it before, just my 2 cents. |

Hey Mate,
I have a 2012 Catalina 3500 with 33lb PE2 on it... I'd be happy to use it top water on kings to 15kg but not really jigging, would want 50lb for that. I wouldn't push this reel much higher than 33lb either... but for what it's worth it's a sweet reel ![]() Brad |

Catalina 3500? Where'd ya score that. Smallest '12 Catalina is a 4000.

A kings a different beast than a spanyid though, especially in shallow water. 30lb kings + shallow water your gonna need something fairly beefy.

Porbably the Hyper Custom as it has Hyper Digigears.

Go the 4500 Maverick mate, you wont look back, tough reels and you'll be able to push it harder than the 4000 hyper and not worry about breaking it.
Stella 5-8 is another good option. Cheers, Al |

I was looking on ray & annes the other day and I saw spare 4500 2010 saltiga spools that apparently fit the old model saltiga, and have 15kg drag. Do you think one of those would fit a certate 4000? If they do then I'd probably get a 4000H-PE and have the original spool with 30lb and the saltiga spool with 50lb for versatility. As for a stella, I don't plan on buying another one until they release a new model, and I can see if I like it or not.

I don't think the Saltiga spool will fit the Certate. If you have your heart set on the Certate then go for it they are very tough little reels, like most Daiwas though I'd recommend a drag upgrade asap, the line roller bearings are a problem also and need to be serviced regularly if you want to get any sort of life out of them.

I am pretty keen on it. Lot of reel for the money. I'd definitely upgrade the drag though.
