It's marketed as an Eging reel for the 3kg plus sized squid they get over in Japan. But like all reels can be used for anything. I have one and use mine for both Eging and normal fishing. It can handle seabass, so it will deff handle barra. Keep in mind it's based of the certate body and has hyper digi gear so they are pretty tough reels.

According to PLAT, the new 2012 Emeraldas with the green/purple paintjob does not have hyper-digigear. The old Emeraldas with the white body does have hyper-digigear. Pretty sure whoever you were talking to at Daiwa just looked at the Daiwa website, where it says that it only has Digigear II. All other sources claim that it has hyper-digigear.

i did specifically ask the difference between the white 2506 ema and the colossal ... and that's what he told me.
but if the Daiwa man doesn't know .. then i don't know how correct websites sources are lol

Mate I have a Colossal on a 302 Samurai. Nailed a 10kg longtail tuna on it at the start of the year, handled very well. I'd say good for medium (80's) barra, may need to work the drag for larger models.

Funny thing is, here is one link from Daiwa Australia that clearly states that it has Hyper Digigear: http://daiwafishing.com.au/?p=1664
Then we have another link from Daiwa Australia of the same Emeraldas, except this time it says it has Digigear II: http://daiwafishing.com.au/?p=3266 ![]() ![]() ![]() On the other hand JapanProFishing, PLAT, Ray Annes and M0T@ckl3 all state that it has Hyper Digigear. I've also played around with one of these reels, I could instantly tell that it had Hyper Digigear since it sounded a little noisier and felt a bit rougher than Digigear II Daiwas. |

^^ haha yeah .. looks like Daiwa is all confused but like you say .. if the gears mesh hard, it's probs coz it has the hyper digigear

The white emma definitely has hyper digigear. Just had a look at the box of mine and it says hyper digigear on it. One of the few english words on there haha

To my knowledge both have Hyper digigear
Don't forget the collasal is Metal body as it is based on the certate body tricked up. Heavier reel, with metal body, deeper spool and max drag of 7kg, suits heavier lure throwing such as Jews, barra, flathead etc. plus Egging of course. The emeraldes 2506 is based on the luvias platform hence made from Zaion. Much lighter, It has a 3kg max drag (without modification keep in mind) and probably suits the egging and bream/light lure casting. Hope this helps.... Go the Colossal |
