Unhappy Fixing Daiwa reels.

Hey guys,

This may help some like me who have a few middle priced reels which start to loosen up or start loose.

You'll need a copper shim or washer in about 0.3-0.5mm
A washer or bolt about 2mm thick. Stainless or gal only.

As we all know they begin DohDohDohDohting themselves like all Daiwa reels I feel inside the tolerances are great when new but plastic wears away or metal grinds down and you have movement in the handle and drive gear/ main pinion.

So open her up and remove the ball bearing from the side you've opened insert shim and close up with standard shim and new shim under ball bearing. Two options insert on inside or outside of ball bearing. If outside it will need to be big enough to only touch outside of ball bearing not inside. If inside match to smaller shim as standard.

For the handle undo handle. Use hole punch with needle point to knock out restraint pin dismantle handle and clean. Reassemble and insert washer or nut between handle cover and arm. Reassemble.

Enjoy rattle free fishing no play in handle no play in drive gear.

Yes, shim above the ball Bearing. This will stop the gear moving x amount and remove the rattle and feeling. Make the handle slightly shorter tightens the movement at the joint in the handle while shimming will stop movement inside the casing. It will feel like a Shimano! Haha

If you mean when you tighten the handle up the actual shaft is moving in and out of te casing the handle addition will also stop this. Altertively you could also shorten the shaft however you may need to retap the screw hole

You have to be kiddin on a new real like the ballistic? Load the shaft with grease. Will stop alot of movement. Seems odd though Especially that pin hole in te centre. Is a pin meant to go in that?

When you move the handle is the other side moving up an down also? Even movement on both side or is the handle side moving on an angle to the other side?

Maybe the shaft is too long like
Mine. Put a washer on the inside of the handle and do a quick test and see if it works otherwise warranty? No wonder so many people selling up.

Spend big $$ or go Shimano that's my thoughts now

What are you doing to these reels? lol My Ci4 is bulletproof, hooked sharks, tuna everything and still tight as. I suppose being in W.A it may be getting a bigger workout than me.

you could try placing a sliver of aluminium foil around the handle shaft when inserting it into the drive gear slot - this would make insertion harder but remove any slack between the two mating surfaces - if thats the case?? You cant tell if its the shaft bearings or the handle unless you remove the drive gear itself and vice it to see if there is any slop there?

Getting the brass shims would be beneficial if you can deduce that the drive gear is sloppy 'side to side' within the body of the reel while seated in the bearings. These shims are added during build as all reels are slightly different and have different tolerances - then it could be the bearing with the slop itself!!

Worst thing about these cold poured gears (both Shimano and Daiwa) is that they dont have much of any forging or abilities to resist distortion wear with the stainless shaft of the handle - the alloy is softer and will distort if the handle is not inserted and tightened properly!

Most of the time with movement (whichever way it'll be) it'll be the bearings or the surfaces they mate with wearing slightly - which leads to further premature wear within the drive / gearbox of the reel itself which cascades to other issues of drive bind and other horrid noises and feel while in use...

Higher tolerance bearings in the drive gear and oscillating gear would lead to better contact and less wear within the whole system. If I had the $$$ I'd replace all load bearings with semi or full ceramic (depending on strain with use and repetition of use) with greater tolerance bearings with ABEC 5 or above ratings.

so the handle shaft that inserts into the drive gear actually rattles when its done up?

You know something's wrong when it rattles and you cant fit a sliver of al-foil in!

Did you wrap the whole handle shaft or just try putting in a rectangular piece in while sliding in the shaft - all you want to do is shim that shaft enough.

Maybe the bearings are dead? Perhaps the protective plates have come off on the bearings?

If you can see the cap move on the other side, that would mean that the
cap isn't tightening in so that it stops the shaft sliding.

The cap screws into the shaft so the screw could be too long or the hole too short.
Or maybe there is something in the hole which stops the cap tightening in far enough.

I like the reels where the handle actually screws into the main gear now. Its a much more secure connnection and one of the things I look for in a reel. I have some Advantages and Sols that have the hexagonal shafts and they are pretty decent reels but they would be better with the direct main gear connection.
