My Import Vs Local thoughts..

I thought i would share my houghs on the Import Vs. Buying local saga .

Over the past few months ive been searching all the Amerian Bass boat sites looking for the perfect new boat.

I originally started at around $15 -$18,000 US mark. How ever i honestly couldn't find anything tht fit the bill. So upped my budget to say $20 - $25K US .. lot's had things i wanted and others had things i didn't. Again i upped it to brand new.... Lully loaded with everything i wanted .. I was getting prices of well over the $45 mark. For me that was out of control.. I still needed import it, pay tax's and duties and sort the small trailer issues.

Of which , do not expect a single cent change from $10,000. This is before you pay several people to look at several boats . People charge on average $15 - $18 Per foot to survey a boat, plus travel. All the boats i have been looking at are 18ft. Roughly $350 each boat, ( if they are close to the surveyor ) if your keen on a few boats .. There goes another $1000.

Some may remember a thread i had a few months back about buying a brand new skeeter from the states. Some of the issues i had, the stress i had..

Josh Patterson weighed in on it and gave his thoughts on the issue. He was saying that at the moment there are some great buys locally, for he record too, today was the frst time id ever spoken to josh ( i was chasing a zx190 cover , of which he did not reccomend ) . Initally i thought no you were wrong.. Everything here is too expensive. So i dismissed his comments .. ( shouldn't have )

What i chose , and why...

I went locally in the end, for me i was looking for somthing that was less than 2 seasons old, and had the majority of what i was looking for , and had to come in at what my budget was.

I bought a Skeeter zx190, some may have seen it in a previous thread , it was only 18months old, and fit the bill.

Why locally.. I get warranty, i can see , feel ,touch , drive, .. All these things weigh heavily when your about to spend alot of money.. Im not relieing on the word of some one else 30,000 k's away..

For me looking at either brand new, or less than two years old, warranty and after sale care was weighing heavily on my descision.. Where is the advantage in buying somthing ive been working towards for so long to have no back up , no one in my corner if somthing were to go wrong ...

This is only my thoughts, i know there are alot of people who have imported boats and are happy. Im sure pepole will continue to import ... for me im petty dam happy at the moment ...

Some great buys locally at the moment.. may pay to think twice about looking outside of Australia..

plus i never had the 3 months agonising wait ....

Great advise mate.Even though you know I imported the Triton it can be a very difficult process fraught with danger.Had many dealings with Josh at Skeeter and a top bloke to deal with.Absolutely love your boat - it will fly with the 175 opti.Really looking forward to seeing it live and posssibly having a session together - Jacks dad Wayne.

Wayno , mate I owe you and jack a few sessions mate !!! , also owe you a big thanks for the initial Nelson weekend mate... I mentioned that to jacko the other day... Better get on the jewies am have a few stubs at the Nelson pub....

Buying second hand anything is always fraught with danger, I know you guys had a few issues, and when you do it again you'll have learnt and can avoid the
.

Looking at the boats I was , that suit new buyer , 2 years old . There honestly wasn't a great market for me. That is ... In the size boat and motor package I wanted. Some may disagree, but I would say there are very few people who want bigger than a 200 on the back. So many boats I looked at had that 200 - 250 hp, which I didn't want. Fuel is the states is alot cheaper than it is here.....

I thought i might also add, with 200Hp outboards costing an estimated $20,000. Why risk having no warranty.

If the boats your looking at are out of warranty , then you may feel differently towards the local Vs. Import.

Good honest post,

all folks considering importing thier own rig should read this.

i have brought in and on sold 5 or so boats now, (Tritons / Nitros only) not Skeeters as I respect josh and his great company.

I no longer import due to rising costs and a flood of Bass boats on the market now. (every one seems to be doing it)

I started with bugger all cash and through buying and selling at a profit now own a Z7 Nitro with a 150 opti and wont look back.

But all my imports as mentioned by tobymcclure came at a risk. It is not as cheap as it was 5 years ago, and yes I have been stung and ripped off a fair bit of coin. but not once have I not made a substancial profit.

When I get asked now about Bass boats I always say buy local.

Well done tobymcclure, I applaud you and your post.

No applaud needed mate, When i first started looking at Bass boats, ( almost 2 years ago ) there were some great buys. People would have made some decent money when it all first started. Looking at brand new / suit new owner boats. Personally i dont think that there isalot of money / benefit to be made.

But this is just my situation and my views on the current situation..

When the american economy fell apart.. That would have been the time to snap up a boat.. Would have made a killing !!!!

Personally I wouldnt buy direct from overseas as I just cant be bothered. I had someone offer to arrange the shipping and surveyor for me for free but I really wanted the warranty and pretty much someone to blame for any problems

I am happy with what I have now. Will swap it out and buy locally again in the future. But will not accept the delivery time I got last time 22 weeks!

I have been having a bit of a look, I have been contemplating going up a small notch in bass boats. Got a quote today and I can tell you I was very suppised at how $$$ some of the Ausy importers are. I will definately be looking at others as I know I can get something the same as what I want or better for about 8 grand less.

cheers
Chris

mate they are always at the poles.. They get alot of hammering.. If you have a boat look further upstream.. they get alot less pressure .. I knocked over 5 in the 3 days and only drifted the one patch once or so and moved on looking for good perch..

Were you there long weekend ? and you saw me should have come said hi
