Why won't my new Sustain lay line on the spool evenly?

I recently bought myself a brand new Shimano Sustain 1000 fg reels from the States. Everything works fine. It's nice and smooth.

When I first spooled the reel with some 10 lb Castaway braid, I noticed that it wanted to bunch the line near the spool lip and correspondingly, there was a slight gap where there was little line at the rear of the spool. I took all the line off again and tried respooling it with the drag backed off a little, but it made little difference. I thought that by backing off the drag, the spool would sit a little further forward, eliminating the problem.

The braid is spooled in a way that when you look at it from aside-on view, the line angled from being about where you want it, at the lip of the spool, but it slopes away markedly towards the rear of the spool. It's almost as if the spool is sitting too far back on the main shaft and not lining up with the rotar as it should.

Yeah, yeah, I know that this is the risk you take when buying gear directly from overseas. I can't just take it back to the shop under warranty. It still casts okay, but the braid sometimes tends to catch when it's coming off the rear part of the spool.

Any ideas on a quick and easy remedy? There's no big drama. It's still quite usable as it is, but it's still a bit annoying.

u should have received some small white packers/washers in the box. Take the line on and put one of the packers on the shaft and re spool and it should be sweet

You need a shim washer under the spool. Did an come in the box? Most brands now give you a few. These are really thin shim washers - not your standard washer.

Thanks redrocket.

I suspected there was going to be a quick and easy fix. It's strange that I haven't struck this before, as I have bought heaps of reels over the years.

I'll give that a try.

lol dont stress mate i did the same thing when it first happened to me.
Surprisingly I'm hearing it happening more and more with top end reels, maybe the build quality aint what we are lead to believe.
