Surf reel and line ?
Hey guys, looking at buying a Shimano Baitrunner for use off the beach and rocks sometimes, was wondering if anybody has experienced any problems with them, and which model is recomended for that type of fishing. Also should i spool it with braid or mono ?
Thanks guys

I have no idea which reel but in general mono is the best because of abrasion resistance. Last edited by silvertreva; 12-06-2012 at 06:13 AM. |

Shimano baitrunner 6500 is a great start, spool it with 30pd mono and you have yourself a great rock/surf reel.
The new models look good, check mo's |

3500B is perfectly fine... i also use a 4000DL. ive got 20lb mono on the 3500B and 20lb braid on 1 spool and 20lb mono on the 2nd spool of the DL.

As far as your choice of line goes, I reckon it depends on how your going to fish.
If you're going to use bait probably go mono but if chucking lures definitely go braid. |

They brought a bait runner out in the catalogue I saw that has a massive amount of drag pressure nd huge spool capacity! So quick question braid is no good for surf fishing?

if your going to throw lures, theres no point buying a baitrunner...
braid is no good for surf fishing to a point... if your geared up for whiting, bream, tailor, dart... then theres no drama running 12lb braid. if your going more along the lines of sharks, jewies.. (big baits) then mono is definately the go... reason being theres just not enough give in braid, and if you've got a baitrunner with braid, say a big jewie starts peeling line off, you then have to give a few winds and set the hook, theres usually a good chance you'll pull the hook. personally i see no point in braid over 12lb. I use 8lb braid for all estuary fishing and mono for beach fishing... however the exception for me is fishing around rock walls / pillons.... i do have 20lb braid on my DL baitrunner purpously for fishing under bridges, i get alot of jewies and jacks. so in baitrunner mode they can take the bait, but i need that quick lack of slack incase they get too close to pillons when running, i know i can rely on the braid strength to get them in quick.. but beach fishing you dont need this mode, so better to have the forgivingness of mono... mono also assists in good drag functioning, especially if you've the need to wind it right up. |

Braid is great for surf fishing and if lure fishing, the only stuff to use.
Some guys don't like using it off the rocks because mono offers better abrasion resistance. Mono is probably the choice if using an overhead reel but with threadlines I still prefer braid. Can't say its ever caused me any real issues. |

I guess it depends on how heavy you want to fish. I just put a nice outfit together which is a 10'6 and a 5000 Stradic FJ spooled with 10lb fins.
I can use it it for tailor, salmon, whiting, luderick, bream, drummer and squid. I wouldn't go too large with the rod and reel because a lighter outfit as it can be tiring to use around the rocks. A 4500 bait runner would be a good choice. What rod are you using or breaking strain line ? |

Cheers, I don't see the point in having a bait runner system for using lures, so il deffinately be using bait cheers
