Getting Jig To The Bottom

Hi all, well my soft plastic adventure has been great...

Lots of Bream and Flatties but since I got a new boat a 4.7m fiberglass I have been having troubles getting my jig down to the bottom. It seemed with the old tinnie I would drift slower than the glass boat

Now I know I could try and use a sea anchor to slow the boat down but I wanted to ask others here in times of strong current which has been alot lately for me do you do anything other than just putting a bigger jig head on to get your jig to the bottom of the column?

I have been using a fairly heavy jig head but it still take a while to get down and often as of late been busted of by tailor and similar before its get down to the bottom

Any help appreciated!

Turn your leccy into the current, cast upstream and let it sink down

If you don't have a leccy maybe you could try and fish places where the wind is blowing the opposite way to the current. That should slow your drift a little.
Wouldn't a sea anchor be useless if your drifting at the same rate as the current?
How about something heavy on the end of your anchor rope. Not so heavy that it holds the boat still, but heavy enough just to drag along the bottom.
If that works be mindful of any damage to seagrass beds etc.

If the current is moving too fast for you lure to get to the bottom than you need to do one or more of these things.

Look for breaks in current and backwaters where your lure will not be effected by the fast moving water. The bream will usually sit in these areas as they dont like working agaisnt the current either. The upcurrent breaks are usually better than the down current eddies. Essentially the upcurrent side is the first ambushing point for greedy fish.

Try using a blade rather than a soft plastic. Blades tend to be effected less by the current. Because of their slim profile and heavy nose the usally get to the bottom easier.

Try using a heavier jighead with realy thin braid and leader to lessen the effect of the current.

If you dont have a electric I would suggest you get one, it is a totally different ball game fishing with lures without one

Cheers
Chris
