i Pilot advice.

Hey Guys.

I am chasing a new electric motor (Maybe) and I'm just curious as to whether I can get a 55lb 12V system and have both the i Pilot remote and the standard normal use foot pedal control? Some say yes, others say no and others say only on 24V systems? Any answers would be great!

Hey,

I have a 12volt 55lb Ipilot that has both the remote and the foot pedal. There are 2 models - i'm not sure which one is which off the top of my head - but both 55lb models come with the remote but only one has the ability to have the aftermarket foot pedal attached.
Some guys swear by the remote, I had it for about 3 weeks and couldn't get used to fishing and steering with it. I thought it was hopeless for fishing racks and rockwalls as I couldn't keep adjusting the steering while fishing as I could with the foot pedal.

I'm sure if you checked out the minnkota site, it would tell you which model did what.

Awesome. I had a look on the site before but I didn't find anything that said you could have both. Also nothing separating 12V and 24V. Could have missed something but.

If I had to choose I would just have the foot pedal. Fighting a fish and driving at the same time with a remote would make things difficult. Even between casting the Co-Pilot remote is annoying.

I had a quick look over the minnkota site and it looks like the terrova/riptide ST is compatible with the foot pedal and the remote.

hope that helps

Hey Troy im Pretty sure they all come standard with a remote only and the foot pedal needs to be purchased as a extra. All should have the connection for the pedal though.

Thanks. That seems pretty straight forward to me. But! A guy I was going to buy one off has had his for 18 months and upgraded to an 80lb 24V system to help push his boat along better.

He said it was a standard Riptide with a foot pedal but the foot pedal was faulty so to keep him happy they put an i Pilot system in for free as an upgrade but that then meant his motor was no longer compatible with the foot pedal control and you could only use the i Pilot remote to control the motor?

Any explanations?

That site you linked me to was the USA site. I was on the Aus site. On the Aus site it mentions that with both the Riptide ST i Pilot and the Riptide SP 'By adding the iPilot system you will no longer have use of the foot pedal'.

That's exactly what I thought originally but now I have no clue. I thought that the head of the motor is different to a standard one but I figured the pedal plug would still be there.

They are both compatable with foot pedals, untill you add Ipilot to the SP. The ST has a different foot pedal design to the SP which sets them apart.

Riptide ST has an optional foot pedal, which I have. You still need the remote to access spot lock and the other GPS features.

The minnkota riptide SP, has the option of Ipilot but it always says by adding Ipilot you will no longer have the use of the foot pedal on SP motors. <- thats a direct quote from the Australian website.
http://www.minnkota.com.au/about/tro...iptide-sp.html

That would explain as they upgraded his riptide SP to the ipilot to keep him happy, therefore loosing the ability of the foot pedal.
The plug for the pedal is a small black lead that comes out of the base of the motor, my Riptide ST has it but the SP doesnt.

What boat is going on? I have a reasonably heavy 4.4m boat and at times I'd love an 80lb motor for when I fish rockwalls in a ripping current, but generally the 55lb is heaps.

Thank you! Been racking my brain trying to think.

I'm not sure what boat he put his 80lb on. But mine is just a 385 Explorer and the 55lb on it at the moment is plenty like you say. So what I am after is the ST with i Pilot, then purchase the foot pedal seperately. That's what I needed to know!

And thanks for separating the differences between the ST and SP.

Thanks!

the 55lb will be heaps on the 385, I had one before this boat and pushed it along nicely with only 44lb on the front.

Mines the older shape hull. It's a v nose punt, not a tinnie. Go the v nose tinnie if you have a choice. Not as wet in the chop. Mine was dirt cheap. $3500 with a 2005 Honda 20hp 4 stroke, electric, decks and sounder. Replaced the sounder and decks so far. Put a 70l live well in as well. Electric and regalvanise the trailer next.

Yeah no dramas there. One more quick question. Terrova and Maxxum? Terrova slides and out and folds down? And Maxxum has a lanyard you pick the motor up with and drop over the side?

I don't think you have an option for the Riptide as it doesn't mention anything? But what makes the Terrova better? I've used both and I think the Maxxums are nice and simple. The Terrova can be a b!tch to slide out sometimes.
